Kalafina's 17th single "Ring your Bell"

Nope, it definitely is from Tsuioku. I noticed it immediately on first listen because the same melody was in in every nothing as well.

Yay, I'm not crazy then \o/. I doubted if it was from Tsuioku or In every nothing, but now that you said that, I understand my confusion.

I have listened to Koibito on repeat so many times. Not because I love it (even though I do), but because ever since grunty pointed out that 1st line of the 2nd verse, it's been slowly eating away at me.

WHO IS IT. Wakana? Hikaru? Hikana? Wakaru?

It sounds so much like the both of them combined at the beginning, as if their voices got together and had a voicebaby, this voice would be it. I wondered whether it was both of them singing together, but no, it definitely sounds like one person. Logically speaking, it has to be one or the other, either Wakana or Hikaru (unless it's actually Keiko all along, having ascended to a whole other plane of voice trollness). After much deliberating, I came to a decision.

Wakana...

Congratulations, Hii-kun. :ohoho: Yup, eventually I decided that if I have to pick between the two, the Wakaru/Hikana voicebaby bears more resemblance to Hikaru than Wakana. So it's probably more likely Hikaru channelling Wakavibes than the other way round. Will be interesting to see what goes down live...
(either way, I'm dubbing this the Hikana voice)
Definitely would love it if Hikaru used the Hikana voice again, or experimented more like this because I feel like she has a lot untapped potential with different styles (remembering how kickass she was in the Yuzurenai negai and Anna ni issho covers from a while back, singing really different to the way she normally does) :cheer:

Ahem. That aside, though, I love Koibito. All the girls sounded great, like they were really into the song emotionally. I just love songs like this that are dark, sad, intense, and I can't wait for the lyrics translation, because from what little here and there I could tell they also sound quite dark and tragic. Could have done with more Keiko, though, because even though she only got one line, it gave me shiversssss :nosebleed:

I really wonder why Wakana cried during the recording of this song.:confu:
^ I feel like the lyrics will probably provide a better clue to that, but otherwise it's probably because underneath the genki girl she's a squishy sweetie-pie prone to empathy-crying. Probably sometimes with strangers, even. :XD: *hugs Wakana*

AFAIK in recording, they record each girl's part separately, and then mix them on PC,

with audacity filter (vocal remover - entire spectrum), I can hear Hikaru and Keiko doing chorus to Wakana parts in the calm part of the song,
from "Kurenai no" start's Yuriko's chorus (you can hear her saying it - without a vibrato though), so maybe its Wakana and Hikaru, and Yuriko & Keiko backing them.

I'm not sure why Wakana would cry when recording this. Maybe because she's been having problems recently (look at what people have been saying about recent live appearances, RYB, FotW etc.)? Maybe she's been worrying about that and then came to sing Koibito and absolutely killed it. The recent interview about her experiences and her happiness at finally getting things right and being confident shows she's been like that before, after all. She seems to come across as a person who's greatest weakness is her own self-confidence and worrying that she's not good enough. Her performance in Koibito is amazing and I'd be tempted to say the best she's been in a long time, not to mention her performances at Music Fair being spot on as well. Maybe Koibito was the moment that things clicked into place for her again.

Source? I don't recall anything about Wakana crying when recording this.

I don't recall Wakana having any problems either...

I don't know, someone further up mentioned it so I was responding to that. I quite often hear things that turn out true and yet have no idea where people even find the info in the first place so I can't help you there.

As for Wakana, her voice has been weak recently, or sounding off. It's somewhat noticeable in RYB at points (or incredibly noticeable to some people it seems, considering some comments), plus in the recording of FotW that was taken from the program, although we'll have to wait until a proper release of that to really judge it. A few live performances over the last few months have had similar things, like the first couple of RYB appearances on TV/radio programs and a little in the recent Storia live.

Really recent stuff like Music Fair and Utage has shown improvement again though, I can't really fault her in either, plus as I said in my post she's amazing in Koibito, also in RYBITS. She has shown signs of this before (since After Eden era) but always improves again after a while, but it's definitely there and audible. I wonder if it's stress related.

^ I didn't read about her crying but if she did, Wakana has always been one to cry easily, not only because she's upset, but also because she's very easily moved.

She seems to come across as a person who's greatest weakness is her own self-confidence and worrying that she's not good enough.
Quite the opposite actually. She may have lost that confidence once but prior to that, she was actually someone who was overly confident. She regained her confidence with Hikarifuru. And since the interviews are recent, I doubt she had any other confidence crises since then. She would have mentioned them.

As for performance, opinions and all. You have yours, I have mine. I have nothing to say if you think that she has issues in the studio recordings. I doubt Kajiura will let Kalafina slide like she did for Keiko's debut with Kaze no Machi he. Wakana has been on form most of the time (she definitely was for Budokan), but it seems just one less than perfect performance is enough to make everyone think that she's constantly having problems. I doubt most here would agree with Kajiura who said that Wakana has become a much better singer than she could ever imagine since Hikarifuru.

I'd love to be wrong in this case, as I've been kinda worried for her. I'm not convinced she's fully confident though.

The only studio recording that I've noticed anything in is RYB, and it's minor and nitpicky. She was fine in KnGnN and its b-sides, same with Alleluia and Believe (the song itself sucks but that's not Wakana at fault) and with RYB's b-sides. She was phenomenal when I saw her in Paris too, but she's definitely had off moments over the last year or so with media appearance performances. Are they major mistakes? No, not at all, but they do appear worryingly often. Not common, but surely there.

I still love her and will continue to support her of course; when she's on form (which is still often) she's incredible. Having not seen them at a proper live (be October already please) I can't comment on that, but I have heard good things, so that leaves me hopeful. As I said at the start, I really do hope I'm wrong as Kalafina mean a lot to me. Maybe I'm worrying too much.
