Something to keep in mind with the interviews is that we are not the target audience, but rather, the more casual anime fan that is not very familiar with the artist's work. True, the press people themselves may not be familiar with they artist, so they are going to keep the questions simple.

Good point. If more casual international fans start becoming bigger fans of Kalafina or Kajiura-san's work, it can only encourage them to come overseas more often!

So far they have done well.

* Anime Boston (convention center) was not full, but there was still a decent crowd. Very good for their first overseas performance. It did help the concert was free.
* Anime Expo (Club Nokia) was full.
* Anime Expo (Fiction Junction, convention center) was full.
* Anime Central (Rosemont Theatre) was not full, but I understand the tickets were sold out, so not all seats were for sale.

And they keep selling merchandize relatively well. The CD sellout at ACen was a good sign.

I think they'll keep returning as long as FJ and Kalafina is tied to high-profile anime. New anime leads to awareness, awareness leads to new fans willing to see live performances, new lives lead to more anime tie-ins. Plus Aniplex is the new Geneon, investing heavily to promote. So yeah, I am hopeful to see them again =)

^Yeah, I am always happy to get someone else to like Kalafina. I saw a few pick up their cds as one booth that was selling them. :dote: Maybe they were converted too.

Being "sold out" is not true. link

Ouch, that hurts. I did overhear something along the lines of ticket sellout, so obviously it was wrong.

So, this is the first time ACen has pay-for performance? That is always a big factor (for reference, see AX).

Thanks for the link. I will definitively provide my feedback.

I had looked earlier in the week on ACen's forums for something about the concert because I figured they had ticket selling issues. Theatre was definitely not filled to capacity as the sections on the sides or the rear of the ground floor were not used, and I doubted the entire balcony was used. And as others posted earlier, theatre was not filling up very fast by the scheduled start time so Kalafina took the stage a bit late. I was in 108, row 4, aisle seat near center, and the first four or five rows to my left in the center of the theatre barely had anyone sitting in them for a while before some people filled in a part of it.

The Anime Expo concert didn't sold out either. There were like 2 full squares/sections empty. But then again, those seats were really crappy, so I understand why no one bought them heh.

I read the entire thread at http://www.acen.org/forums/index.php/to ... t-theatre/

It sounds as if Kalfina weren't promoted using the music that people would recognise (Madoka / Garden of Sinners) and there were issues of letting people know about the Kalafina booth and availability of tickets.

Back in 2011 I attended a one day convention in Sydney called SMASH just to see Eminence orchestra perform, and the concert venue was only a quarter full. It seems as if no matter what is done people who would have enjoyed the concerts don't end up going.

^ Yes that was what I understood from it, instead of promoting them as the singers for "this" and "that" popular series, they just promoted them as Kalafina, and of course few people knew them. Also there was issue about the pricing policy where you would have to wait in line for an ACen badge in order to be able to buy the ticket, and many people not interested in ACen didnt want to spend so much money just to see Kalafina, and all the sits no matter where they were, were sold in the same price.

I guess its an issue of how Sony promotes in overseas and how the convention people decide to promote them, because in the end there are too few popular Japanese artists in US excluding the anime ones.

They have to understand it's an anime convention and being related to anime should be the selling point, I guess. But there wasn't a lot of stuff on the floor and around the area with any promotion at all for the concert either, so I think they lack a lot in that.

I'm surprised the theatre didn't advertise for the concert at all. I kept looking for posters or announcements on the theatre's on-the-street-screen-thing, but didn't see any.

^I don't think they were paid to do that. You can't even find the concert listed on their website.

Re: Kalafina invited @ Chicago Anime Central convention (ACe

I know, that sucks. I also looked on the site, but could not find them.

Also they should record each concert and at least put them on cds to sell to the people who went, I was just listening to Ongaku and manten again and I think I like the lives more. I would buy the cds, even if the sound was a little messed up. :dote:

I hate when people dont adverstise things that should be advertised :bloodlust:

But something you dont really need is all around you...

Wow, I'm surprised it was only 1/3 full. From my position (bottom level, middle-right), it looked to be about 2/3 full at least. Most of the empty places were far off to the two sides. Maybe there were a lot of empty seats in the balcony? I wouldn't be able to tell.

Before we start panicking... Doesn't the Rosemont seat 4400? That's a huge number squished in one concert hall. So even if it's only 1/3 full, that's still 1500 people. And I bet the view from some of the side seats... would not be very good, hence why nobody bought those.

(Of course, I can't be sure all those 4400 seats were for sale.)

On what went wrong--I think organization and marketing. From the website crash to the confusing information on the main ACEN site (I had to comb through their forums), it felt like I had to jump through a dozen hoops to get to the concert or the autograph session. The marketing was also a bit too low-key for their first-ever paid concert, and it didn't emphasize Kalafina's anime connection enough.

I just hope this won't prevent ACEN from bringing Kalafina back in the future....
