Re: Kalafina invited @ Chicago Anime Central convention (ACe

I thought they mentioned that After Eden was on itunes? Hmm, maybe they were wrong, or I was just super excited to be there. lol And yes, I want Animexcel to show the pic too! And I thought they did mention Garden of Sinners at the panel, but maybe not as much. I am also so happy to see others saying that obbligato is their favorite from consolation. Hopefully I can grow to like signal more after this live. Ahh I want to go back. Oh yeah, george it was called Rosemont Theater but also the AKOO, I think either one is okay. It says Rosemont on the ticket though. Also I was in the balcony but if the camera panned up just a little more you would have been able to see me.

Thanks to all the people who reported, your reports are now accessible via the new newspost :)

@Liana: Someone said in the shoutbox that Consolation is available on Itunes, but even thought they said After Eden is, it isnt.

@nataku00
Glad I wasn't the only one who thought Keiko seemed kinda shy. I was afraid I'd scared her. :ohoho:

Btw, anyone figure out why Yuki considers Hanataba Kalafina's darkest song? I've read and reread the lyrics, and while they are certainly dark (and impenetrable :@_@:) I don't consider them darker than, say, Magnolia or Lacrimosa.

Re: Kalafina invited @ Chicago Anime Central convention (ACe

^I agree about Hanabata. I think lirica is their darkest song myself. But that is just me.

I agree that Lirica is their darkest song overall, thanks to the haunting vocals and arrangement. However, upon rereading the lyrics (pun unintended), I find them dark but not as overtly so as Magnolia or Lacrimosa.

Then again, Lirica fits under the category of "impenetrable lyrics" alongside Hanataba, while Magnolia and Lacrimosa are more straightforward.

The set list sounds amazing! I can't imagine how awesome the new songs sounded live! It must have been amazing!! Thanks everyone for the reviews :D

I'm hoping for a world tour or something like that sometime in the future XD

Another thing from the panel:
One of the audience questions was how were they able to remember the kajiurago for their songs? (the person didn't use the word kajiurago though) I think the translator didn't realise he wasn't talking about the Japanese lyrics....Hikaru answered that she becomes the person in the song, that's how she doesn't forget the lyrics.

:nosebleed: :nosebleed: :nosebleed:

And with the Consolation on iTunes, I expected to be upset that I paid 24 extra $ for it, but I honestly think it was worth doing to be able to get the physical copy and postcard.:)

The setlist sounds really good...

Thanks for all the reports! Hope you all enjoyed yourselves! :shy:

Am I the only person who thought Hanataba was really dark and had that "cold" feeling about it? Like it sends the chill down your spine... I thought it felt like 'someone who lost a dear, loved one, sank into depression, thought about the memories of the person, and finally decided to follow the loved one into the other world?'

My teachers told me I have a knack of reading too much into things...Maybe it's just that... :rain:

Wow, that was awesome SenXXi ! Were that staff japanese or americans ? Also I wonder do they mean their Concolation BD or the DVD that will come along with the next album ? XD They should interview Kugayama too, since he's the one who has attended their most concerts I think.

It was Japanese staff. The one asking the questions was their translator who was helping during autograph signing as well as during the panel. Also they didn't specify if it was going to be for the Consolation Live BD or if it would be one of those DVD/BD extras for the next single. To be honest I didn't feel like I had the right to ask since I was already having a hard time trying to keep my composure at how sudden this all was hahah.

iirc the questions they asked were:

1) How did you learn about Kalafina?
2) What is your favorite anime?
3)Anything else you want to add along with a message you would like to say to the girls?

The questions felt sort of winged since after we agreed to do the interview she was thinking of questions to ask. Also everytime me and my friends finished answering a question there would be a pause with her thinking of what to ask next. I felt as though I said a decent amount, but I really wish I was more prepared and not in this state of disbelief during the interview since later on in the night when I regained my composure I realized some things I wanted to say but didn't get a chance too :<

In the end I'm just grateful that I was even given that opportunity.

@nataku00, Coral

I didn't find Keiko to be shy at all, but rather the most outgoing and energetic. I think Hikaru is the more shy, as she often speaks less and in a lower voice. Wakana has this sort of "dignified" vibe on her—it's hard to explain =)

Anyways, on to part 2!

It was hard to sleep Friday night. I still had the adrenaline rush from the concert and autograph session, and my ears were buzzing until the following morning. I didn't really mind, it really was worth it! XD

Saturday Panel

I joined the line for the panel pretty early, and was about the fifth person in line. I spend most of the time talking to a father and son attending the convention together; it was pretty cool seeing them share a common interest. I also bumped into SenXXI and his friends, but unfortunately we were in different sections of the line and could not talk for very long.

One of the persons staffing the panel was cosplaying Kyoko from Madoka. I think she was also helping out last Otakon, so she might work for Aniplex. She was wearing a fang prop which was a nice touch.

The panel room was pretty big and the stage was high, so I think everyone got a nice view of Kalafina. Like previous Kalafina panels, it was run by Aniplex and more restricted than most other panels: no recording, and no photos except for press. For comparison, Yuu Asakawa and Yukino's panel were the complete opposite, and even beer was given! (Note: this is an observation rather than a critique).

Format:

* PV video footage.
* QA with Kalafina with pre-selected questions, and the occasional PV footage and Aniplex plug.
* "Exclusive" look at Yume no Daichi PV. This was relevant for later on.
* QA with attendees.
* Quiz contest.

From left to right, it was Hikaru, Keiko, Wakana, and the translator. Hikaru and Keiko shared a mic, while Wakana and the translator shared the other. It was funny watching Hikaru and Keiko interact during the panel, sometimes like mischievous girls.

The microphones had stands. When Wakana was answering the first Aniplex question, Hikaru and Keiko decided they didn't want their stand, so started to mess with their mic. Suddenly there is feedback, and Hikaru and Keiko have this "I didn't do it!" face while putting the mic stand under the table. I don't think many people in my section were paying attention to the question ^^;;

I asked the first question in the audience Q&A. I mentioned how they have a new look for each new release, and how well it matches the song's feel. So how do they do it? Wakana answered they put a lot of effort making sure the music and visuals fit together. Other posters reported on other questions.

For the quiz contest, they were giving out autographed t-shirts of their lives. The Aniplex guy would ask the question and a Kalafina member would pick who to answer. One shirt was of Magia live and another for 5th anniversary live, which went to a Stocking cosplayer who lost her voice when picked to answer the question ^^;; One question was which is the first PV shown in the panel (Magia). Another question was how many times they have performed in the US (three).

I got a dark brown Consolation live shirt, answering what is the theme song of fate/zero (To The Beginning). It almost cost me the flash falling off my camera setup, but it was enough to get Wakana's attention, so I guess it was worth the risk ^^;;

The last question was which is the featured single of their latest album (Yume no Daichi). Several people missed the question, prompting some funny reactions from the girls. Keiko raising from the tables looking for the next person to answer was pretty cute.

Autograph 2

Originally my intention was to get a shikishi/calligraphy board autographed, but instead opted for a copy of the After Eden book they were selling in the booth. I'll probably regret this later on as I collect autographed shikishis, but the book is really nice.

As she was autographing the book, I presented Keiko with a print of fan art I commissioned. She really liked it, and showed it to the other two and thanked me. The original is watercolor. I don't have art skills, but I worked closely with the artist, redoing several parts in the process. I'll post a picture when I have a chance.

Something to remember is that Kalafina autograph sessions are always very rushed. So Animexcel really did the smartest thing by presenting at the end of the session.

I wanted to stay longer for a second autograph (either the shikishi or To The Beginning poster), but I had to move on due to press duties :(

Raffle

One of my tickets was off by two numbers to win something. Oh well.

Other Convention Notes

Yuu Asakawa was a very good guest. She is very funny, friendly, and fluent enough in English, making panels more interactive and interesting (instead of relying on a translator). Her solo panel was real fun, while her second with two english voice actors was pretty informative.

Yukino was a big surprise. She has a great voice, and interacted a lot with attendees. I didn't go to her concert but her acoustic performance was amazing, like being in a lounge. If you haven't, I highly recommend checking out her music.

This was my second Anime Central. The convention has grown a lot since my first in 2005, but staffers have managed to keep the convention well organized. Kudos to them!

I am optimistic Kalafina will come again to the US. Kalafina and Yuki Kajiura have been tied to high-profile anime for a good while now, and Aniplex is putting a lot of muscle on promoting their titles. I hope to meet more CPM members when that happens! Once again, shootouts to SenXXI - see you again soon!

thank you all for posting your reviews and experiences! they're so fun to read (and i am already a pro at living vicariously so i love you all :sparkleguy: )

When Wakana was answering the first Aniplex question, Hikaru and Keiko decided they didn't want their stand, so started to mess with their mic. Suddenly there is feedback, and Hikaru and Keiko have this "I didn't do it!" face while putting the mic stand under the table.

their interactions sound even more adorable every time they appear... :nosebleed: i feel so guilty for shipping irl people but dammit kalafina stop giving me material actually no on second thought keep going

@casarina
On Hanataba:
Considering Yuki's comments about the song (or rather, Hikaru's comments on Yuki's comments), I think you're not far off the mark on this one. And, again, I definitely think the lyrics are dark, especially Keiko's solo and Wakana's second chorus, though I'm not certain it's about following a loved one to death. I mean, that's certainly one possible explanation, but I can also see it as being about growing apart, what with the "we call out to each other / and laugh by ourselves" part. Anyway, I'm just surprised Yuki considers it the darkest song.

@jdcSeiken
Wakana definitely has a dignified vibe in terms of looks and stage presence, but I thought she seemed super excited during the signing--judging not only from what she said to me, but also from what I could make out of her conversations with other fans. And I agree Hikaru's the most shy; I kinda expected her to be, while I expected more hyperness from Keiko. Not that I mind Keiko seeming shy, as long as I didn't creep her out.

Totally agree with you regarding Yuu Asakawa. I laughed out loud when she said, "You just like big boobs, right?" (to the Vandread guy). I wasn't able to attend her panels with the English actors--any juicy bits you're willing to share? :plz:

they were selling AE books? :omg:

@Coral

Kalafina definitively tries to keep certain image, but sometimes they do break character. When that happens, Hikaru and Wakana do talk more, and Keiko is even more outgoing and excited =)

My favorite part of Yuu Asakawa's first panel was the beer part, and her reaction to my grasshopper taco comment (insects *are* eaten in central and south Mexico, btw).

The second panel was enjoyable because of the dialogue between the three guests. Of course, she restated her unconditional love to Leon Kennedy =) Somebody asked what is the character they are most like, and she replied it was Yuuki Mitani from Hikaru no Go. As a followup from the first panel, I asked the English VAs how long it would take to train Yuu Asakawa for an English VAs role, and she received tons of praise for her English. I do agree that Yuu really underestimates how good she speaks.

Something else,

During the convention I talked to a press group doing interviews. They told me that a common comment from guests was how amazing was Kalafina's concert.. So yes, it looks like Kalafina got some new fans during the weekend =)

They sold quite a bit of merchandize, but most was sold out by the end of Saturday. I put a list on part 1 of my report. The only things left at the end were the concert DVDs and Blurays, I guess because they are more expensive (they are so worth the price, though).

I REALLY REALLY hope they make a release of the concert. Considering the setting and acoustics of the Rosemont theatre, why not?

^ I think its unlikely because the setlist is kind of small, and also, few people would buy it in the US. The most possible is that they will include a "documentary" video in their next BD or album, like the did the previous times, where we will hear half of 1-2 songs. :spotlight:

Re: Kalafina invited @ Chicago Anime Central convention (ACe

The concert was more about an hour and a half long. The setlist was shorter than a standard concert tour, but way longer than Anime Boston or AX.

Though yes, it is wishful thinking ^^;;

Yeah, I was thinking "that's not what the person asked."

OMG! You're the camera guy! (who almost broke equipment getting that question.) I talked to you at the end of the raffles! You were sweating a waterfall. Hahahaha. And I expect you to send us a link when that interview hits? =D

It's 4 songs longer than AB. I think it's because they have more songs now, plus they have their band (minus Konno-san) and with the venue, they SHOULD do more songs than before.

^ I forgot one more reason that makes it unlikely they will release that concert: Western fans do much more noice (screames, chears etc) so if you record with a far away camera it will be difficult as hell for the concert sound to reach the camera clear. (or is the sound recorded somewhere after its made and then they just choose scenes from the muted cameras ?)
