Sword Art Online (SAO: P)

  1. gunland: I don’t think the flute is bad either, neither is the guitar. It’s a little out of place, I guess, I just think it was overused like swordland (which now I can’t unhear the “coffee soda, give me coffee!” part lol) I like it as a revision, but I guess there are too many of those in this.
  2. the psychedelic world: It’s weird, like is said, but I think I like it. Those beeps at 0:48 seconds are a little weird and remind me of the Star Trek beeps on the computer consoles. Heh
  3. Death Gun: It was used a lot in the show, obviously since he was the main “bad guy,” but I like it. It still gives me chills. I like the suspense it has in it, reminds me of some of the Madoka Rebellion tracks.
  4. think tenderly of you: This is a nice piano song. I like Yuki’s piano songs. This one is a little… let’s say it’s missing something? But it’s a nice relaxing song to listen to if you need to relax.
  5. daily life, you and me: Same as #4, relaxing and peaceful. The flute is nice. Reminds me of Hanako a bit, with that title.
  6. something is strange: Well, this is kind of boring, to be honest. I was thinking with the title it was going to be as awesome as “something, everything is wrong” from Rebellion, but it did not deliver. Will not put this on my playlist.
  7. creeping up: Kind of the same as the above. There’s not really a melody.
  8. unnaturally tense: At least I remember this in the show, at the times where it was tense. But it is still kind of boring. I like the next song better.
  9. inside information: I really like this song. It reminds me of “Abel’s Ark” from the Xenosaga unreleased music, at least the piano part does. It seems like a good walking song, and can’t wait to try it at the gym or in the car driving.
  10. concerning operation: reminds me of the strategy meeting one from Fate/Zero (I like that soundtrack, yeah, there are songs on there that can be missed, like this ost, but I love “let the stars fall down, rule the battlefield, and this day, and never again.” Also “the world is tumbling down” is one of my favorite Yuki “chorus” songs. Rule the battlefield is a good pick me up song.) I like it even if it is missing something again.
  11. a pressing danger: Really love the violin. Reminds me of the “war” songs in Hanako. It’s a little boring, granted, but I kind of like the simple violin songs.
  12. shooting it out: This reminded me of slipstream a lot from Tsubasa since it has some of the same instrumentals, and the tone is kind of the same. Also it’s similar to Evoluntionary Girls Organize a bit, but just a bit.
  13. where’s my enemy?: I thought this was going to be painful #2 from Fate/Zero again, since it has the same sound throughout, and I love that song, but it’s different, but has the same tone as some of the other songs. I like it though.
  14. they start fighting: Yeah, it does sound like that Madoka song, and kind of like you’re in a jungle. It is weird, since from the title you think it would be something awesome.
  15. continuing suspense: I like the violin in this and it really gave me chills in the show too. This is better than most songs so far, but short.
  16. she has to overcome her fear: I LOVE this song! From start to finish it makes me happy. This will be a good driving song. I think it’s different from absolute configuration since I think it’s simpler, which I like. The violin reminds me of something out of R.O.D. actually, wish there was more of it with the singing. I love the piano bit right before the guitar. The singing is great. (I do wish the other song from the Extra Edition had been included too George, and the luminous sword remix. Or maybe those will be in the Rosario ost?) My favorite one from the album though, although a later song does almost tie with it.
  17. goodbye, again and again: Another lovely piano song. Similar to ‘think tenderly of you,’ but still good, and sad.
  18. escape: really like it. Also reminds me of a R.O.D. song or a Kiddy Grade one. The use of strings is great in this one I think, and “horns”.
  19. Her actual world: Actually kind of boring, no real tune. But it is creepy and better than the other “sfx” ones.
  20. her cruel past: It’s an okay cello one, but I like the ones from Rebellion more.
  21. looking back on those days: A nice violin soft song. This is nice and serene and reminds me of the Yuuki story (I know it’s not used there, but still).
  22. her tragic memory: I like the piano, but meh. It’s weird.
  23. crooked mind: Reminds me of the weird song in KnK, that chaotic violin song. But I like this one better. I think this is the only one where there are guitar “screeches.” It also reminds me of Love Pain from Petite Cosette a bit.
  24. a brisk conversation: I just laughed at this one, since I remember the first scene it was used in. heh
  25. he, or she?: I laughed at the title and this one too. I actually like it though, it’s a little Christmasy sounding actually, reminds me a bit of a happier Kalafina song as well.
  26. shooting ‘em up!: I like this one. It also reminds me of slipstream a bit. The drumming is a bit repetitive, but other than that is a good song to rock out to.
  27. quickly and without fail: Another “swordland” mix, but I like it, kind of. It’s a little chaotic, but I think this is when they jumped on the buggy? That was funny, so I’ll remember it and that scene.
  28. drive your way: Ugh, another variation. I don’t really like it this time. The guitar later is the only nice thing about it really, other than that it’s chaotic.
  29. Bullet of Bullets: Am I the only one who doesn’t like this? It’s just too weird, doesn’t sound like Yuki at all, and is too strange. Sorry, just how I feel.
  30. another state of emergency: I like all the violin tracks in this ost, so this is no exception, but the beginning is a bit weird, but then it reminds me of a Tsubasa song as well.
  31. I’m always thinking of you: A nice peaceful song after all that chaos. Heh This also sounds like a Christmas song, kind of. I like it.
  32. so I met her: It’s nice, kind of boring, but in a peaceful kind of way. I like the different sounds in this one.
  33. a bleak and desolate land: I LOVE this one too. (The one that was almost a tie.) It’s so unique to Yuki, and I love that feel. The violin is great, wish that part was longer, but it fits. I don’t know, I just love this type of song. Kind of like days gone by from F/Z. There’s just something about it that’s so awesome. And the title fits too.
  34. she’s a knockout!: Actually this was the first one that reminded me of slipstream, and I love the flute right away, then the chimes with guitar. It’s nice.
  35. fighting hard and close: I thought this one was going to be different, not slow as it is, but faster. But I like it. The use of strings is nice. It’s a pretty lengthy track, which is nice.
  36. you are the winner!: I don’t know, it’s weird, I kind of wish they would have kept this one out.
  37. peace, again: I’ve noticed she liked using a lot of ,again in the titles, which is fine. Heh I like it. It’s nice and relaxing and the cellos is nice.
Overall I would give it a 8/10. There are some really great songs, like she has to overcome her fear, a bleak and desolate land, escape, fighting hard and close, and she’s a knockout! But there are some “bland” or simple tracks in there too. I kind of wish she had better songs for the GGO arc, as she really outdid herself with Noir/Madlax/El Cazador, which were all about girls and guns. And I am surprised with the lack of vocals. Maybe she’s not using much vocal as she has Kalafina and FJ to write for, since Hanako only had the one song too. Still, would have liked more. But I did like it.

To be really harsh, I hope Kajiura leaves SAO after this. I haven't enjoyed the music she's written for the show, and I keep getting this overwhelming feeling of apathy from it. It's all bland and excessively simple. There are too many ambient tracks and the ones that are worth a listen could have been written by any composer trying to copy her musical styling. Like, it has all of her current trademarks (sfx, chanting, strings+e.guitar combo, slow piano, etc.), but it has none of her swag or flair.

^ That's up to her. We know she gets job requests but accepts few of them. I too would hope for some new show from her, or game, since the next SAO arc (Alicization) is too big, and as far as i have reached in the novel very boring, so if she makes this music with the interesting parts, I dont want to think what's next.

Kirito gets attacked IRL by some ally of the DaethGun guy with that medicine that kills you fast, and is take to hospital but in reality's he's taken to some secret facility in the middle of the ocean (that floats like an oil derrick) where he's put in a machine that messes with his nerves and cures him via expiriencing a 2nd life on a virtual world (the one the arc takes place in). In the meantime Asuna looks for him and ends up in that facility can thought the story so far talks with the proffessors in intermission chapters of the main story. The main story is that Kirito lives as someone else in that world. The world in that game is in middle ages with knights, evil monsters like orcs, dragon, magic and swords. The world in split in 2, the evil area (forgot the name) which if a good tries to enter burns or something, and the good one. Kirito is born in a village far away from the ccapital of the world but kinda close to the border of the evil part. He gets to meet an other guy around his age called Eugeo i think who is "tasked" by some law thing to chop a huge tree thought his life, like his father and grandpa did, and he does that since he was 12 and now he's 15 or 16. In that world there's some world law which orders for those that pass to the evil area to get prisonned near the capital after arrest by the Intergrity Knights (some knights riding dragons). Kirito finds a way to cut the tree fast, and there's a sword inside it, or at the top of it - i dont remember - and so they start journey for to become this kind of knights themselves so that they can save a girl, named Alice, that was prisonned after crossing for a step the evil area when Kirito, Eogeo and her were little. and so they go into some sword academy to train, pass exams and get promoted to some other school after which you become knight.

Meanwhile Asuna has reached the facility and talks with the woman hinted at the end of the Mother Rosario and some other prof, both of which were colleagues of Kayaba Akihiko in the past. as well as with Kirigaya (they guy you saw at Extra Edition and GGO's ep 1 and 24 talking with Kirito), and learns that this is an experiment aimed to develop a new type of AIs that are not just NPCs but normal personalities without body, in order to insert them to war rabots for piloting them. And so the reason Kirito is in there is a) to cure his body from the toxin b) so that they can see how a real human reacts with the NPCs - ALL people in that world are like that - and the reason there are so many strinct laws in that world is because the scientists want them to try to not obey them, because if they dont they cant be used for killing when inserted in robots. The machine he's in messes with something called "fluctlights" that's into the spine and holds some sort of memories.

And so Kirito and Eogeo's next school is near that capital city, which is devided in 4 districts, where there are nobles that are close to king, some other kind of lower nobles and normal people. The nobles generally look down on the prementhioned, and so in that school Kirito Eogeo and some other girls they meet later are normal and some of their tutors and some other spoiled guys are noble. There are some insidents between them which I think are not worth menthioning, and them somehow they both disobey one of the rules of the world law and are taken into prison by the Alice girl who is now a Kinght and remembers nothing of the past. They break free, and start searhing for the girl and the man their believe that controls the world from a high tower (Kirito believes he is an IRL person from the scientists team, who he can contact ot figure out what's happening) This is until half vol 12 of the novel where I have read, and now the novel is at vol 15. Alicization is volumes 8- 15 and counting. As you can see for during at least where i have reaches the battles are extremely rare and (there's only a tournament - exam that could have and some orc fight) and to see how much this is, season 1 was volumes 1 and 2 and some side-stories for the first SAO and vol 3, 4 for ALO, vols 5-6 for GGO and 7 for Mothers Rosario. while Alicazation takes 7 more chapters so far which means 2 more season of anime if they dont shorten the story, and its gonna be grunty "snorefest" for sure :XD:

Sword Art Online 8: Early and Late
Sword Art Online 9: Alicization Beginning
Sword Art Online 10: Alicization Running
Sword Art Online 11: Alicization Turning
Sword Art Online 12: Alicization Rising
Sword Art Online 13: Alicization Dividing
Sword Art Online 14: Alicization Uniting
Sword Art Online 15: Alicization Invading

Any ideas on what she could compose for next ?

@Liana_Ilia its the "drive your way" the one they jumped on the buggy, the previous was used in one of the tournament scenes where Kirito attacked a guy with his lightsaber who had ambushed him.

about Bullets its because it doesnt sound like Yuki that its good, since its a new track style. Anyway I think that maybe she asked Korenaga for help for some of those rock tracks

PS: @sora: If you think the music overwhelming check out the rips of the next soundtrack where the Yuuki theme has 5 variations, some of which are very touching :)

well I havent watched SAO but I do listen to its music bc yuki kajiura indeed. I think SAO's music is better than SAO2's. I love how yuki kajiura make a lot of variation of her music(like fate zero has "tragedy and fate" "painful" "point zero" pandora hearts has "will" "contractor" "beside" and more) which i like it bc it is not the same tone. some is epic, some is sad, some is happy. but i think she use"swordland" too much.
so what i really look forward now is "new series"(not sequel) composed by yuki kajiura. if there is, i will watch no matter what type it is!! (but more Madoka or Fate Heaven Feel would be awesome too!)

The theme variations arent so many, if you compare with other shows (i think you just dont like them) In SAO the main theme is "sworldland" and we have none that's like it in the first OST, in the second its only "Last Fight" I think, and its only this that there are a bit more, its "gunland", "quickly and without fail" and "drive your way", and there's 1 more in Mother's Rosario and 1 variation of Luminous Sword.

In comparison Fate/Zero has main melody the "the beginning of the end" which is also in: ost 1: Point Zero, if you leave, forebodings, tragedy and fate, ost 2: fate to zero, this day and never again (later parts), the world tumbles down. Not counting the ones she did for Fate Stay Night UBW, that's about 4-5 tracks.

Kara no Kyoukai has 1 variation of the main battle theme on every movie, and countless of the "in the garden of sinners" melody, not counting seventh heaven and snow falling.

Madoka has 3-4 variations of the "sis puella magica" theme in the 2 movies ost, 1 in the "Magica quartet", madoka's part and also "her wings" and more.

Elemental Gerad was filled as **** with "everlasting song" variations, and Pandora Hearts too with variations of the "melodie" and "contractor" (especially the second ost)

maybe you are right. fate zero may have the most variation(maybe? im not sure) but I think i like swordland.
anyway thank for answer and sorry for my bad english lol.

don't forget about the Rebellion OST and it's made dame yo theme

Kirito finds a way to cut the tree fast, and there's a sword inside it, or at the top of it - i dont remember - and so they start journey for to become this kind of knights themselves so that they can save a girl, named Alice, that was prisonned after crossing for a step the evil area when Kirito, Eogeo and her were little.
the three of them decided to adventure to an ice cave that supposedly had a dragon and was at the end of their territory. They found the Blue Rose Sword there and that's what he and Eugeo used to cut the Gigas Cedar later. Alice saw a Dark Knight dying nearby and accidentally stepped into the Dark Territory because she wanted to try to help him.
The machine he's in messes with something called "fluctlights" that's into the spine and holds some sort of memories.
They're like souls, nothing to do with the spine

you may find it boring but I really do like this arc. It's more focused on character development especially on Eugeo's part. There aren't that many battles because that's against the Taboo Index, remember.
in the last volume I read (14 I think) they have invaded the Axiom Church at last and are making their way up. At one point Kirito and Eugeo get separated and Kirito ends up fighting Knight Alice. He tries to talk to her and something he says triggers her eye to start throbbing (because of the Taboo Index) and it pops out (rendering her no longer a pawn of the highest minister). They end up falling out the window but thanks to Kirito they don't fall all the way down. He manages to climb back up to the 99th floor and Alice decides to side with Kirito and Eugeo. When they finally get to the top, however, they find that Eugeo had succumbed to the highest minister and been made an Integrety Knight. There's a whole big battle and it's oh so messy but still isn't entirely over in vol.14

Im not readying the latter spoiler because I plan to read the novel, but for the first, thanks for the corrections, I didnt really remembered what had happened.

I dont really mind less battles, but it also lacks jokes, its just serious stuff without much of suspence, and a soundtrack for this will be more ZZZ than Achilles to Kame ost lol

George: Ah... I guess I just didn't like those two as much as 'a bleak and desolate land' which I think is very unusual for her as well. And also I think I meant about swordland being used is the director's fault, as we have said many times. I like swordland actually, especially the middle part. And melodie is from Noir... unless you're thinking of melody? And there was many Yuuki themes, remember?

I think she did say something along the lines of that since she is a composer and has to compose many songs for a show or game, that some may sound alike. And if there's a theme, there are variations. (Just like in movies too, I know Hans Zimmer does this, Interstellar comes to mind.) I think Hanako though is probably one of the only ones that doesn't have too many variations.

@Liana: I mean the pandora hearts melody no matte how its spelled XD

Yes, its his fault for using only the first swordland and only once or twice the other arrangements. I am not against arrangements, I was just comparing amount of arrangements of main theme melodies because jirasak was complaining SAO had many. Yes she did alot of the Yuuki theme too :)

Oooo Saori Hayami. I like her. I think I remembered her being in this, but I forgot. heh (And that is a pretty header.) Is there going to be more SAO in the near future? I thought there was another arc, if I remember you saying that correctly, george. I hope there would be more, since I do like the soundtrack, even though it isn't one of her best. (I think Hanako takes the cake for her more newer ost to be the best.) I think there is potential for more great songs like a bleak and desolate land and she has to overcome her fear.

^ we dont know yet if there will be or not, I guess they will announce something during this event

I cant wait to see if Kajiura will perform with FJ or not. If they do they will probably do Luminous Sword and hopefully one of the new Remi songs, *prays for the unreleased one*, I also hope we get an interview.

^I hope she takes FBM and REMI+Yuriko for the performance. I wouldn't mind the other girls coming, but REMI is the main vocalist for this soundtrack.

Yea but in Typemoon aniversary she got FJ to sing the battle is to the strong and beginning to the end, even thought original vocalist for the first is Hanae Tomaru, the difference now is that she is announced while in the TM one she was a surprise guest, so i dont know what to believe, but i still think using FJ would be easier for her.
