it's a psychedelic world indeed.
I don't like the Remi track, I didn't like Hanae's absolute configuration which sounds similar to me.
you are the winner would have been much better with real brass!
I guess I like a pressing danger&another state of emergency&continuing suspense&fighting hard and close (all alike but still good enough)
love the drums in they start fighting although it's short and too simple.
looking back on those days sounds familiar but it's a nice listen.
crooked mind may be a bit crazy.
the rest is a bit mindless ambiance and melody-less guitar swinging imo.

looking back on those days sounds familiar but it's a nice listen.

^ its similar melody to Tsubasa Chronicle's "dewdrops", that's why it sounds familiar. I thought they would include it in the 2nd sao 2 soundtrack since it was used twice there and was more fit to it, while one once in GGO.

I think I like about half of the CD musics, even though I wish they had released the others too. I will write in detail tomorrow :)

This soundtrack isn't as bad as I was expecting. There are some really nice tracks:

Psychedelic world
Shooting it out
Crooked Mind
He or She?
Shooting em up
BoB (probably my favorite)
a bleak and desolate land
fighting hard and close
drive your way (the best of the swordland arrangements)

There are probably more but these were the ones that stood out the most.

Unfortunately, I still think this is one of her less interesting works. There are way too many ambient tracks, almost all of them sound the same. On top of that, the tracks with flute are really out of place. I don't know what Kajiura was thinking there.

"she's knockout" (the xylophon instrument) has partly melody of EGO

title of "escape" in the folder is actuallly "no escape"

Here's the comparison list
http://www.mediafire.com/view/m41l1r7y9n9m57y/bgm_list_comparison.odt
according to it there are 8 unreleased tracks
im still not sure about ep 4 bgm 6a & b since I remeber it somewhere, will have to listen more to the soundtrack. here are these tracks if you want to help out. here are all the rips if you still want them (click for harmoonica ones).
Each of the following duos counts as one:
ep 4 bgm 3a + ep 4 bgm 3b
ep 4 bgm 6a + ep 4 bgm 6b
ep 14 bgm 1a (harmonica track) + ep 14 bgm 1b (harmonica track)

I mostly want the cow-boy bgm, the piano track and the harmonica one, the others are mostly just sfx.
==================================

Full OST review:

Gunland: best part the guitar solo, kinda used to the swordland melody by now, I think this could be ok even without the flute.

psychedelic world: Good music for a modern shop of weapons (as is used in anime) , althuogh it could be even better for a tech store :XD:

Death gun: I think this music is too scary for such a loser villain :XD:
The character design is out of Darth Vader too, so I wonder if Holywood asked Yuki to compose a music for him for one of the new Star Wards, if she would give them this :ayashii:
The drums are good but it would prefer them less repeated.

think tederly of you: Really fitting for the Asuna & Kirito scene, it has a calming effect

daily life you and me: I guess same goes for this one, I really like the flute. I think it would fit Mirai Fukuin well too :)

Something is strange: Sometimes I wish Yuki would combine all SFX tracks in 1 track alaa Sawano so we wouldnt have to listen to them every few tracks :XD:

creeping up: really creepy as title suggests. the metelophone sound gives a melody line to the otherwise knk-ish feel.

unnaturally tense: I think tracks like this would be more interesting if performed by actual musicians: percussion, drummer etc

inside information: probably the best of the sfx-ish tracks. Has nice acoustic piano and the electronic effects make it sci-fi

concerning operation: This track so so much similar to "strategy meeting" of ost 1 that I wasnt sure if they were the same at first >_> would be better with a real brass

a pressing danger: the strings give a epic vibe to this, enough to catch your attention while watching. The drumming wasnt present in the anime but really fits

shouting it out : nice for tension build up, too bad they never used the e.guitar part in the anime, it was the coolest part.

where's my enemy: I think this would be better with only the bass, the electronic sounds are too loud here

they start fighting: One more of these lazy percussion / sampled flute tracks XD Yuki has used that sample in 2 different OSTs in a few years: Madoka "Agmen clientum", and this.

continuing suspense: this could be mixed with pressing danger with no problem, as it has same instruments and similar feel..

she has to overcome hear fear: I totally wasnt expecting the Remi track to have this title, as in the anime it was used in a certain scene that's unrelated to "overcoming her fear", anyway... The bridge part with the e.guitar was used in one of the CMs before sao II start airing. The song isnt bad but the vocals are kinda too typical and the strings solo doesnt match with the rest of the song. I enjoy the guitar though :)

good bye again and again: Here I again dont understand the title. This is probably the Shinon theme, its sad but isnt touching (unlike the Yuuki theme <33)

no escape: One more track that would be better with really brass, since the strings definetely are and are so clea :)

her actual world: nothing to comment

her cruel past: The quality of the cello sound is so clear! it could be fine even without the sfx.

looking back on those days: This one is similar melody to Tsubasa Chronicle's "dewdrops", that's why it sounds familiar. I thought they would include it in the 2nd sao 2 soundtrack since it was used twice there and was more fit to it, while one once in GGO. The melody has keeped the tooching of the original :)

Her tragic memory: This is a nice piano track, heavy which is kind of rare.

crooked mind: This is one of the best tracks, does to the sudden passing from scary strings to crazy violin <3 the reminds me of "cyber-slum" for .hack//sign due to that element.

a brisk conversation: Music for funny moments, really cute. I was actually expecting "he or she?" title to match to this bgm.

he or she?: This is really nice for relaxation :))

shouting'em up: Unpleased that the drums are the same melody line throuout the whole track, but this e.guitar is cool :)

quickly and without fail: This is a nice disco-ish sound and the guitar is really crazy~ XDD

drive your way: nice rockish swordland arrangement :)

Bullet of Bullets: At start is typical badass cow boy/bar music, I was surprised by the melody change in the middle, but it has a nice transition, and became even more badass. I wonder if the disc scratches are sampled :ayashii: This is really unique for the Kajiura ost discography so far in terms of music style.

another state of emergency: Epic music but kinda short, I guess it was made for cliffhangers.

Im always thinking of you: Really sweet music. It reflects love that's in the air :dote:

so I met her: good for sleep relation XD

a bleak and decolate land: This is one of my favs too. The electronic sounds goes very well with strings and e.guitar and overall is very solid. Even if the strings have short melody, its really uplifting. The drums as also well played without the annoying mania with cymbals. This kinda contrary to it title. This makes me believe that Sato is better for playing in studio recording where he can improvise.

she's a knockout: This a nice track too even though it has the EGo melody on the xylophone, the guitar is nice too, but im not sure if the flute fits

fighting hard and close: All brass should have been real. This quite typical Kajiura track, but I like the slow part after the middle.

you are the winner: Good, but it dragged way too long, maybe Yuki could add more melody after the middle instead of copy-pasting. The e.guitar doesnt really fit here.

peace again: Warm track :)

Overall, I think that even though some of you might not like this ost ( :psst: ) I think its pretty good, if you except some of the sfx tracks, since it introduces two types of music that Kajiura didnt really have the opportunity to experiment on till now: rock and disco / electronic, and "Bullet of Bullets" and "a bleak and desolate land" are a good example. This ost is defenetely better that Sao's second (ALO), in which I didnt really had the will to want to re-listen after a while. I am not saying its her best but its definetely a good one. From the unreleased I want the 4 I menthioned and especially that cow-boy track since it has violin at the end which is cut.

The fact that the best parts of the tracks of this OST as well as of the first of SAO (March down, First town) where never played on the anime proves that this director is a fail and they better change him if they plan to continue the novel adaption.

I think Im giving this ost 7/10

Fav tracks: (not in order of liking)

Bullet of Bullets
shouting it out
she's a knockout
her cruel past
her tragic memory
crooked mind
shooting em up
drive your way
I'm always thinking of you
a bleak and desolate land
she's a knockout
she has to overcome her fear (guitar part)

Oh my goodness! Thank you sooooo much! I am listening now but will have to listen to the full version in awhile. 'she has to overcome her fear' is awesome! I really love the violin. I think it is different from absolute configuration, since that was a little more chaotic? This is more smooth, and flows better. I love the vocals. So pretty! :sohappy:I was waiting for it.

^ I just remembered they totally forgot to release the Extra edition Remi song as well as 3 other tracks from it :(. IMO that song was better done than the "she has to overcome her fear, so I'm sad. If they dont release it with the next one, I guess we can only hope for a compilation CD ala Madoka / Kara no Kyoukai

SAO 2 review :

Preface : I'm a sucker for digital tracks/ambient music so this OST is more to my liking than the previous. It's still really really bland, though.

I don't know what was in Kajiura's mind when she decided to put flute in Gunland. It's a bland track after all so I'll leave it at that.
'the psychedelic world' is nice and could be my favorite from this OST. Track 03-07 are just zzz. Thankfully 'unnaturally tense' saves me from boredom. It's typical and it has nothing special but it is pleasant to my ear. 'inside information' is okay but it's nothing new. 'a pressing danger' sounds like left over from KnK so I like it. Wow so many ambient tracks on row. 'shooting it out' could be nice if the guitar has more 'melody' other than that one basic melody and some random screechings. 'where's my enemy?' feels okay just like that after I hear it. Not memorable. 'they start fighting' is stripped version of 'agmen clientum' :( 'continuing suspense' sounds like another leftover from KnK. While I like it it just doesn't really grab my attention. ANYWAY I listened to this OST after watching Kara no Kyoukai 01 to 06 in one sitting so I feel like a lot of tracks are somewhat like KnK tracks (because most of them are sfx and digital tracks) but just not quite on the same level with KnK OST.

'she has to overcome her fear' is another 'okay but it's just like that' track. 'goodbye, again and again' is boring. I actually feel this way towards most of Kajiura's piano based soundtrack. They just sound so lazy imo. 'escape' sounds like something from F/Z ost and it's boring. I don't even think 'her actual world' has a real melody line lol. 'her cruel past' reminds me of 'serena ira' and they're major ZZZ. 'looking back on those days' is just so typical Kajiura. No comment on 'her tragic memory'. I like the beginning of 'crooked mind' but then it becomes zzz when the guitar comes. 'a brisk conversation' actually makes a nice break from all the ambient tracks, typical kajiura strings tracks, and lazy piano track. to put it before 'he or she?' is a good choice. I like 'he or she?'. Well ambient tracks start again. 'shooting 'em up' is screeching guitar track, me no like. 'quickly and without fail' has that overused Kajiura melody that I actually like until the random flute and more screeching guitar comes. Seriously, Kajiura? I like the part where the strings come. 'drive your way' is another guitar track that actually is okay when the guitar isn't just some screeching. 'Bullet of Bullets' is okay. 'another state of emergency' is also okay. I like 'a bleak and desolate land' because it has something different. I actually like the middle part of 'she's a knockout' (the opening is just ...) but it becomes another screeching guitar track with random flute thrown in. 'you are the winner' isn't really giving me the feeling of a winner :XD: 'concerning operation' sounds like another track from this OST which I forgot because they're all bland.

Favorite :

the psychedelic world
unnaturally tense
continuing suspense
a brisk conversation - because it's different.
he or she?
quickly and without fail
a bleak and desolate land
she's a knockout - middle part

TL;DR : This OST could be divided into 3 section. The first is ambient/digital tracks. The second is lazy piano, acoustic guitar and cello track. The third is screeching guitar tracks. There's not much (if not none) variation here. I'm a sucker for digital tracks so I'd rate this OST before than the previous OST but almost all of them are bland. Some are nice but since there's almost no variation here this OST becomes really really boring.
Personal rating : 6/10

^ I was expecting lower rating with all the "zzz" and "bland" comments :XD: Why you dont like the violin @ crooked mind ? (looks like you skipped it). What's the problem with the screetchings ? I think they are a nice addition since she rarely uses them.

Aparently alot of the tracks have stuck in my mind at night, namely Bullet of Bullets, she's a knockout and shoot it out

PS: I foun the scans of S1 ost 2 at a site and in one of the pages with an interview I spotted Yuki's name menthioned so I wonder what it says. Its the second question when looking at the right of the right page. :plz:

I give it a 6 because there are some tracks I like plus there are also some okay tracks.

I won't *really* mind the screeching guitar if she used it in a few tracks, not in so many tracks that are put one after another like this. It's very unpleasant to hear. That, and I don't really like screeching guitar on any music actually.

I didn't skip 'a crooked mind' btw and I didn't say I don't like the violin. I don't like the guitar.

At least this is better than F/Z OST imo. *prepares himself for tomatoes. thrown at him*

I don't think me not liking F/Z OST implies I won't enjoy orchestral concert. I actually really like strings when they're beautifully used instead of the mashing bombastic strings here and there in F/Z OST. Plus like what I've said over and over again, I'm a sucker for digital tracks.

I looked at the F/Z OST thread and wow apparently I'm the only person who doesn't like the OST (at all). I still don't like it even after watching the anime because none of the tracks, even the glorified point zero etc sent chill to my spine. I even appreciate KnK sfx/filler tracks more than them. KnK is probably my favorite OST and I love the way she utilised strings in that OST.

Anyway I think SAO OST 1 = OST 3 >>> OST 2. Some of them are enjoyable but none is memorable enough. OST 2 is just zzz.

I don't think me not liking F/Z OST implies I won't enjoy orchestral concert.

agreed. F/Z ost doesn't really live up to the standards of a good, original orchestral concert... Point zero, rule the battlefield from ost1, you are my king, this day and never again, Babylonia from ost2 are what come to my mind at first thought and that's about it. Go to the Shikata forum for an orchestral concert :)

KnK tops both of course. I tend not to like ambient tracks but KnK ones were sublime not to mention Kajiura's use of the strings. The ambient tracks in SAO don't interest me that much, as I said, they feel like mindless squiggles of samples but it's a matter of opinion and this varies with ambient music especially.

flute in gunland doesn't sound so jarring, the guitar feels more abrupt in fact. drive your way is a good alternative I think.

I would give it a 4. The tracks I enjoy the most make up 20 min so it's like one third of the disc and there are no tracks to abuse imo.

^ the only KnK track where I can recognise superior strings to fate/zero is M23 the latter part . As for the ambient tracks, I think its all about her choice of samples (since these tracks are made of samples anyway both in KnK and here, except certain tracks that had some instruments too like KnK 1's M07). Perhaps she had put more thought in the KnK ones since she was asked to have them without melody (interview question 4), it was the first time she was making so many at once, and it was a big movie project so she couldnt put some random samples in line and get done with it.

George! don't make me listen to the whole KnK ost collection! though I might just do it to give some examples of superior strings, imo anyway.

^ I have done it in the past and that track I menthioned is the only that comes to mind atm :)

if you are going to do comparision, compare tracks with similar purpose, eg battle theme with batttle theme.

I may compare the use of strings and how much successful it is in conveying the emotion and skill; all subjective of course. I can't specifically compare battle themes because with the knowledge I have I can only conjecture about f/z.
