Kalafina 21st single "Hyakka Ryouran" (Katsugeki Touken Ranbu ED)

How are y'all hearing all of this when all I literally hear are Gogatsu no Mahou and luminous sword??????????????????

@Yui Makino
Well,
•Parallel Hearts from refrain chord and melody progression. (See grunty's exact comparison SoundCloud file)
•Distance to a lesser extent from high-to-low-jump-back-to-high chorus progression used, even though Distance is a waltz.
•Believe from blatant gradually rising verse-to-vamp-to-chorus progression.
•Maboroshi no Sora from Wakana lead and the high-to-low aesthetic progression in the chorus, with the chorus ending in the middle of those two, bringing in a different mood.
•FictionJunction in general because of the small counter-melodies (i.e. a subordinate melody that is different on its own but complimentary to the lead) that Keiko is given, as well as tempo, background instrumental, and harmonic choices.
•I see what you're talking about with Luminous Sword, which also has a high tempo, high-low-mid progression and small alto counter-melody.

I call them the super-musical-term, "echoes" :XD:

Also what are you talking about with the "verse-to-vamp progression" with believe..? Cause the pre-chorus is in F#m, while the chorus is in Fm, and the transition goes D(VI)-C#sus4-C#(V)-Fm(new i) (the terminology is a bit confusing)

Other than that I agree with all those points that make FJ songs sound like FJ

As usual with me, I'm talking more about the mood of a song, caused often by the lead and the instrumental, than the actual EXACT key. In Believe, my interpretation of the progression is that the verse has a low (i.e. solemn, dark, serious, intense) aesthetic, which rises a bit when Wakana comes in (in HR)(or comes back in, in Believe's pre-chorus), and then the chorus comes, and leans toward a usually trademark-Wakana generally hopeful/uplifting/encouraged aesthetic.

^Gotcha. The word "progression" made me start thinking about the chord progression of the song, which made me confused :blood:

The problems of being a music nerd >.<

IGNORE, OFF-TOPIC
@Westkana
It's fine, I'm only a dancer that sang in chamber choir for 7 years but learned very little musical jargon, could barely read sheets, and just knew how to sing from the mood that my designated specific harmony sounded like. I was considered baritone but as explained by my director, "a tenor that could sing bass" (i.e. a male Hikaru) so I would always enjoy the weird middle harmonies they gave us. You're allegedly a music nerd from technicality; I guess I'm a music nerd from dance, which requires empathy with the music. And Yuki Kajiura is such a force in causing enticing aesthetics and so that's why you all usually see me saying such-and-such-mood-blah-blah over actual proper musical terms which is usually almost all my arguments are justified with. XD

Song is okay. Apart from the 4 secs of flute at the beginning, there's nothing "japanese" to it, even though i expect the bridge to have flute too, but that doesnt make it much japanese, i mean there have been so many Kalafina songs with flute. I like the beginning part with Keiko :)

Also that 2nd ep was so boring, they basically slashed some more flying skeletons, talked lots, and then went out to slash some more lol. That gun dude is getting on my nerves, he's acting like a 5 year old all the time, and the supposedly fun momments arent even funny. Also they needed to think for sooo long to figure out the enemies are aiming for war lol.

@Hayden Kurosaki Yeah, I definitely get that. Kajiura is talented in putting a mood in the music. I'm one of those weird musicians that thinks music theory is interesting, (it doesn't help that I've analyzed believe quite a bit; It's surprisingly complex) so I'm sorry if I nerded out then >.<

I can't even hear the flute in the background, since it is a fast paced song with a lot going on. At least it has a better flow to it, unlike One Light or Blaze (which was better, and I like the song better than One Light) even Believe felt out of place at times.

george: I am listening to storia as I am typing this and I am hoping for more flute usage like this. If not in this song than in the b-sides maybe? But if she was talking about this song, maybe there is more flute. Can the person who attended the live where it was sung the first time, confirm?

I can see the parallels to Parallel Hearts. haha As I have said. I actually like the flow of the song. It's fast and powerful in the beginning, then gets a little softer, then gets bright again, and probably another verse and a bridge with some Kajiurago (there wasn't enough in into the world) please? I am getting excited for the b-sides as well. They sound interesting, from the titles. I am expecting one ballad and maybe a folk song like serenato or moonfesta please? I wish there was footage of them singing the song somewhere, and hope to soon see the new dresses up close. One month!!!!

Random thought: Speaking of flow, I have no problem with Kajiurago bridges as an idea -- my favorite Kajiura work is in Kajiurago. But similar to most opinions on songs as a whole, I just want to be reminded of something different. Don't give us another neo-Eurosounding simplicity. I'd personally like the melody to be a nod to something understated, like . . . Requiem for the Evil, or Jr., or something. It should flow into something countering the expectations that have been set within the past several years and reached the breaking point of overuse when misplaced in Blaze.

^Agreed, though I really love the Kajiurago in Blaze, it did not mesh well with it. Maybe it could have been in eternal blue (just watched the live of that again so it's in my head) or something.

Also my brother approves of the song! He has not of anything Yuki for awhile, though he hasn't heard much. heh

EDIT: Just listened to Parallel Hearts (do not really care for the song, but Yuriko has some lines for once!) and it is the exact same melody and words in the very beginning of the chorus and PH. But now I don't cringe as much. I love the song, can't wait for the full. And about Hikaru being in it, she has done the last two anime songs so maybe she's just getting a few lines in this and it will be Keiko and Wakana. Not sure how the live version was, but would love to hear more about it.

So the full version was on kalafina club today... pretty cool. I love the kajiurago in the middle. I can't tell who's singing it. The bridge is freaking epic. and keiko gets another stanza which is pretty cool!
They all get pretty good parts in this song, which I enjoy quite a long.
I quite like the way Wakana sings the last chorus.
So the structure of this song is quite similar to believe's, but I think its a lot less confusing then believe's.
Quite like it, overall.

The short MV of Hyakka Ryouran is out. But I cannot save the video, sadly, since it's region locked. Here's if anyone can use VPN to watch. Love the outfits :3

Oh bless, I can save that one then thanks!

Edit: Is it just me or is the intro kind of different than the one in anime ED? I haven't listened again so it might be just me
Yeah the intro is different for the music video. It's a lot longer for one, and in general just sounds different.

Wow. I love the intro and the part at the en of the tv size. Wow their dresses are so amazing! Wakana looks so different with her hair up like that and the dresses are amazing! We don't see a whole lot of Hikaru's just yet. But I am please with this, even if there's no story, it's a pretty cool one, unlike Blaze and One Light.
