Kalafina 18th single "One Light" for Arslan Senki [confirmed]

@Liana_Ilia I like Believe too^^ It's not my jam but I find it enjoyable.

It would be interesting to see Yuki's point of view on the matter of directors and the instructions they gave her. I'm so curious.

Let's just accept the fact that Kalafina has descended to the typical anisong artists who has songs with almost the same vibes whenever they're put in animes :p It feels like they actually have mold for Kalafina anisongs. When they're asked to work in an anime, be it an OP/ED, they'll just use this mold over and over again, making their songs sounded overly similar. Kalafina's uniqueness in their old releases was what got me hooked with them but now it's almost nonexistent.

What makes me really disappointed with one light is that one light is used in an anime with strong middle-east vibes that Kajiura could take to her advantage but no she didn't incorporate that element into the song. She managed to put emotion and celtic-vibes to Hikari no Senritsu and baroque (?) vibes to Lacrimosa, the elements that were present in the anime the songs are used in. Their recent releases? No, nope, none. Even Eir's lapis lazuli still has this exotic feeling to its melody, not exactly middle-easternish, but it still has different flavor compared to her previous songs. Instead we got the most generic Kalafina song ever with melody lines that sounded like typical shonen-anisong, at least in their previous releases they still had this "Kajiura-ness melody" in them. And no, putting Kajiurago bridge doesn't count :p

@ritardando - I like the music to have its uniqueness also - the YK Live vol. #11 blu-rays having Rie Akagi live in them helped - as a fan of Masato Honda on sax I didn't look forward to the live of Hitorigoto but was pleasantly surprised that Rie Akagi came up with something living and un-cliched for it.

I'll hear how Kalafina sound at Animelo Summer Live at the end of this month, and might be able to comment first-hand.

Kuga: That is why I really enjoy Rie's playing. Not only in Kalafina's songs, but in their lives too. I loved how she made Hikari no Senritsu different (she didn't do the crazy drunk flute this time during the solo heh) and it sounded like a different flute sometimes, at least to me it did.

Yes, please comment. But if you can't have your phone out or something, please don't get into trouble, and post afterwards. (Though I was so over the moon after the ACen concert. But I still remembered things.)

What does all that have to do with what rit-chan said?

Maybe it happens less with Kalafina, but sometimes a song that starts out bland gets better with later arrangements (which could be changes to the vocal arrangement without any change to the backing).

If "One Light" gets performed at Animelo Summer Live it will be interesting to hear if the vocal arrangement is any different from the released single.

If she doesnt like them she can always turn them down in the first place. I think it would be falce to think that the ones she does is all she is proposed, the ones she does are the ones that do appeal to her interest, but maybe in different degree.

I hope OL will be performed on Animelo Summer live this August 30.. I quite like the FBM there~

It's funny because I remember reading Kajiura say in an interview, which I'm pretty sure was about Kalafina, that she'd rather have people complain that their music sounds too similar all the time than to be one of those groups that tries to change their sound and betrays the fans' expectations.

Well, it's kind of a weird situation now, isn't it?

People are complaining that their music sounds too similar...
but instead of sounding too much like the old stuff, it's repeats of this new anisong stuff, which they switched to while betraying the fans' expectations. So... you're committing two sins here, Kajiura-san!

Kajiura's contradicting herself. It was her who originally said that Kalafina was a place for her to experiment with new sounds, and now she's okay with recycling literally the same stuff without even bothering with experimentation?

I wonder what the girls' input on this is. They're Kalafina, surely they would have some feelings about their current sound versus the sound they had back in the glory days.

Their "glory days"?
For us, for sure, I totally approve.
For them...
Let's have a look at the sales' digits:

Kimi no Gin: 60,922
Hikari Furu: 58,379
TTB: 52,413
Magia: 48,679
Oblivious: 38,695

Amongst those you have the three MSMM singles and the debut single, these are kinda "special" in the discography for obvious (I hope?) reasons. And the first Fate single too.

After that, here comes the following:

Believe: 27,722
RYB: 26,244

Sprinter: 23,309
HNS: 20,281
Fairytale: 20,252
Hallelujah: 18,980
HB: 18,704
and 5 other ones below.

Yeah, hopefully, HB is in the lower half of the ranking, but below it you find great ("musically" speaking) singles like Lacrimosa, KSNSNH, or Storia, amongst other.

On a count of 17 singles, Believe and Ring Your Bell managed to rank 6th and 7th. For SME, that's quite a good thing to keep going this way, because the risk is lower than to let Kajiura-sensei experiment, and potentially have to face a commercial failure, like for Storia and its poor 7,093 sales – but yes, I know, that's not an anime tie-in, so let's say: KNSNSNH and its 11,769 sales.

Kalafina's exposure has massively increased since then. That isn't a fair comparison because Madoka is one of the biggest reasons they sold so well. The singles they started out with are what I would regard as Kalafina classics. HnS, Lacrimosa, Magia, sprinter, etc. - they're pretty much universally liked by the Kalafina (and Kajiura) fanbase. I myself don't care for the Kuroshitsuji tie-ins, but Lacrimosa has excellent composition and a fantastic gothic sound while Kagayaku had the girls' passionate vocal delivery and an amazing Kajiurago bridge.

Those days were the glory days. Maybe not sales, but musically. Seventh Heaven and Red Moon were probably what I would consider some of the best Japanese albums of the years they were released, and I listen to a lot of J-music. Consolation saved Kalafina, and I only hope far on the water can do that for Kalafina as well.

My worries are just towards the album songs and non-anime tie-ins (and B-sides to an extent, but I don't regularly listen to many of Kalafina's B-sides). I've already resigned myself to the fact that the A-sides now will never have that classic Kalafina sound that actually sounded like Kajiura put effort in her compositions we all fell in love with, ring your bell aside, because it was a really refreshing change of pace.

I'm putting hope on the B-sides for this single. One Light is terribly mediocre - I like the Hikaru parts, but only for her delivery, not the melody nor the instrumentation. It's generic to a fault.

In fact, I'm probably only still listening to Kalafina because of the girls. Kajiura is a whole 'nother issue with sloppy composition after sloppy composition.

^I agree. I also keep on listening to Kalafina because they had the voices I used to fell in love with. (no matter how boring their recent releases were XD)
Aside from being a tie-in, I think Bsides has something to do with the sales imo. I knew a few people who managed to buy believe after being hooked to IEN and lapis. Same goes for other singles as well :)

Plus, an avid anime fan would be pleased to have those singles through anime editions (and include them to their what-so-called 'otaku stuff', lol). And that worked for Madoka Magica and Fate series for they are both great! (tbh, I got hooked to misterioso after hearing this song inserted on the Rebellion movie haha! XD)

That isn't a fair comparison because Madoka is one of the biggest reasons they sold so well.
That's exactly that I said. Apart from the Madoka singles, which were huge successes because it's Madoka, Believe and RYB are by those who sold the most.

Those days were the glory days. Maybe not sales, but musically.
Idem, that's what I wrote. Sales digits taking over one of the last bit of musical art. We think their best time is behind, because music was better. "They" think the best is forward, because they think of "career".

Sounds like SME told "okay, you had fun for quite some time, now it's time to make cash."

In just a mere 6 days I will most likely have my copies (Blu-ray and Vinyl) of One Light! The song is really growing on me, and I can't wait for a new episode of the show to come (though off topic I know) so I am excited for this next week. (I usually get my Kala singles a day early because of CDJ's Intermediate Shipping. Can't wait to play the vinyl, as it will be the very first vinyl I actually own.

^I agree. I also keep on listening to Kalafina because they had the voices I used to fell in love with.

the problem for me is that their voices don't sound the same as they were back then when I fell in love with them... let's say that I approve their live singing abilities now but their voices aren't as pleasant as it used to be, save for Keiko.

Not sure why @ritardando has to explain to ya'll why he's falling out of love with a group that has been producing mediocre songs.
