Fena: Pirate Princess: OST & OP & Taiyou no Kouro ENG ver in Junna's "Dear"

Looking forward to it. About to watch.
Hopefully it's crazy good or a glorious trainwreck. ^_^

Edit:
Holy fuck. Is that Jouji Nakata? It is.

Edit2:
lololol. Skadoosh. At least they played the part of CharaPV2 that I liked.

Edit3:
That OP arrange started great but then when it cut and switched to refrain with FBM&strings sound, it sucked lol.

Edit:4:
There were like 4 times in this episode where I thought it would cut to credits lol.

Guess I'll update the archive in a moment.

Updated rips
updated 001, 026; added 010b and everything above 031;
041 is in the choirless episode version and then also an extended mockup incorporating CharaPV2 and choirs; (personally I prefer it without choirs but we know they'll be there on OST ;p)
removed 029 since it's part of 014;
other missing numbers are either my mistakes or zingers/seconds-long-sfx tracks which I'm not sure about being YK. I did include 043 cause I liked the sound of it - clearly I just pick and choose. ;p

Edit: I'm thinking 039 is probably 008 or 040 but not sure. :/

aberu is ew... the OP arrange is nice, the attack music is meh it's ok. reuse of many tracks is getting a bit...
the episode was also too coincidental to put it mildly.
if yukimaru doesn't die after THAT...

I'll be fine with him surviving as long as he's not kicking ass already in the next couple of episodes. Assuming there's no timeskip or Fena having magical healing abilities... and at this point who knows...

hurrdurr:

(Retroactively time powers rather than healing but same principle ;)

I imagine he will survive actually. super weird if he dies but it was weird that they charged a full blown navy ship xD also aberu creeps me out, he clearly sees helena in fena which won't end well tsk. i also bet that the red-haired pirate survived she makes a nice villain.

I hope the music will get a bit more intense (saving the best for last kinda situation) . ?

Story wise it's kind of difficult to guess where they might be going and how magical/fantastical things are going to get.

Obviously we have Fena having visions of choosing "blue water" or "storm clouds". Or perhaps both as Cody seems to imply and clearly know more about it...
Abel looks the same in Yukimaru's flashback, granted it's just a siluette and assuming it is in fact Abel. Maybe his body doesn't age? O'Malley also asks Fena how far back she and Abel go...
Mebe the white hair characters are all just clones or some shit, lolz.
Watch El Dorado, Eden also be related to the Fountain of Youth. Or even Atlantis - we do be using a submarine. ;P

WHO KNOWS?!
Based on the episodes so far, I'm confident I'll enjoy myself to the end. No matter what they throw at us.

There's also this toonami voice saying "season one" that makes you wonder...

It's hard to guess how much they could be saving.

All we have is the PV1 and dub trailer stuff:
pv1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhM5dp7y4aw#t=0s
pv1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhM5dp7y4aw#t=18s
dub https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ci_Vauuz7AQ#t=20s

The synth at PV1's 18s and at DUB's 20s sound like they could be the same thing sooooo these "3" might be 2 or even one track. (I can't make up my mind if PV1 is one track, lol.)
Plus who knows what Joelle's vocals in ep4's vision are part of. Maybe also this, lol.

I hope this is the case as well. I know it's only 12 episodes, but we've heard a shockingly small amount of music. Contrast that with Vanitas which seemed to give us at least two or three new tracks even till the end.

Weeeell... it may have seemed that way on Vanitas but if my rough calculations are correct... it really didn't have that much new stuff in its 2nd half.
Sometimes tracks seem like they are new/appear later than I counted them because of how they edit/use them - like Hanae ShortPV5 in Vanitas and swordland in Fena.

receiptsss.gif

Vanitas:
ep01 - (up to m010) - 9 tracks; (+/- with different key versions if they are separate)
ep02 - (up to m018) - 8 tracks;
ep03 - (up to m026) - 5 tracks; (+2 eyecatches)
ep04 - (up to m032) - 6 tracks;
ep05 - (up to m036) - 4 tracks (including one wooshing sfx);
ep06 - (up to m037) - 1 track; (mind you Hanae ShortPV5 is counted on ep4 because of that intro part being there)
ep07 - (up to m039) - 2 tracks;
ep08 - (up to m042) - 3 tracks;
ep09 - (up to m043) - 1 track;
ep10 - nothing new;
ep11 - 1 track; (date track not in rips)
ep12 - nothing new;

Fena:
ep01 - (up to m013) - 12 tracks; (counting Fena's humming as Joelle ver)
ep02 - (up to m022) - 7 tracks;
ep03 - (up to m023) - 1 track; (mind you swordland is counted on ep1 because of its drums being used there)
ep04 - (up to m027) - 3 tracks; (mind you Joelle is counted on ep1)
ep05 - (up to m031) - 3 tracks; (not sure about 030)
ep06 - (up to m037) - 1 track; (+1 those ?ED strings)
ep07 - (up to m043) - 4 tracks; (even ignoring 39 and 43 that I included in my rips)

Obviously I could be off.
(mistakes left uncorrected in my ripping/sorting process, mistakes in recognizing previous tracks, mistakes in general counting etc)

I only know about Kajiura composing the OP, and think that the OSTs is quite nice as well, but I didn't hear much of them because I just used the notebook speaker when watching the first few episodes. I've just known that Kajiura also did the OSTs for this one when I came to this thread..lol. Using earphone is really better...:). I've rewatched all episodes using the earphone before writing this. (Story-wise, I enjoy it more than Vanitas though :P.)

OP: I feel that it's quite generic and kind of boring..., but it grows on me after the first few episodes. Junna voice is good, and I guess that she could deliver a good live performance, but her voice is not my cup of tea.

The chorus melody sounds super familiar, but I can’t think of the name of the exact song with that melody @~@.

Compared to other recent Japanese songs, I put it in the same level as Homura, but not as good as Hibari, and definitely not in the same class as Haru wa Yuku and Wonderland IMO.

OSTs: Many pieces (non-battled&instrumental) remind me of Hanako to Anne, and I love them! Those tracks go well with the fun&lively scenes. The mysterious Goblin island theme is nice as well.

I love the vocal tracks that Fena hummed in the beginning, the track in the cave scene, and during the fight in Barbaral. (I wondered is it the same as that Swordland-like one that came after when Yukimaru arrived. Hopefully not.) That Swordland-like sounds less fantasy and so gives a different vibe from its original. I think I'm ok with it.

Episode 4 features many lovely songs. Am I the only one who feel that the songs do not sound East Asian to me @~@? (I’m Southeast Asian.) They do not give strong European feels though, but still Western to me. I can imagine hearing them in nature or (not too old) history documentary of places in Europe, America, or even Australia, but not Asia or Africa.

There is also a track with a melody that sounds like a part of a Kalafina’s song (Probably Neverending?). But it’s a beautiful melody though…I’ll try to not care much about the similarity. (It’s firstly heard in Episode 4, and I heard it clearer in Episode 7 when Makaba convinced Shitan to join them, and during Abel&Fena conversation. Maybe more, but well…I’ve just finished Episode 7 before posting this. LoL)

In episode 7, the songs during the two ships fighting and Yukimaru childhood are quite nice (I think some of them are new). The battle theme with OP melody (not sure that the very Japanese part when Yukimaru boarding the ship is also a part of it, or they’re just used consecutively) and swordland-like theme also works well in the fighting scene :).

However, like what I feel with Vanitas, I feel that I can't find the identity of the song from this work. Many of them are good, but I can't find sth. that shouts out "Hey, I'm an OST from Fena, the pirate princess." It may become better once we can listen to the whole album of the OSTs though.

Artwork: I accept that the picture is of a very high quality, though I'm not much into the character designs. Seriously, Yukimaru and Fena look like they are at the same age when they're young, but grown-up Yukimaru looks so old...=A=. During their meeting in the forest in the first episode, Fena knows that it's Yukimaru from that black eyes, but I'm like...his eyes don't remind me of the young Yukimaru at all...what was Fena talking about!?! TwT

The first episode really gives the Disney-vibe as someone said here, and that is I hate about Disney's works. Thankfully, that atmosphere dropped once the Goblin knights appeared. (That ending scene is kinda unexpected...what the reunion! LoL)

Yukimaru is so funny when it comes to his interaction with Fena..lol. Besides Yukimaru&Fena, I think the interaction of one of the twin (Enju, I guess) and Mary is kinda cute too..lol. (I hope Mary would survive…please..TwT.)

At first, Shitan looks like just a typical No. 2 male protagonist that you can see in various animes and mangas (a character that seems better than the main male protagonist in some or various aspects, just to make the main one does not look TOO perfect..lol), but he kept showing his different sides since Episode 4, when he talked about how he turned to an archer. His brother and the fact that he is the one who revealed the real goal of the Goblin island people make him more interesting...(I guess that Yukimaru knows it as well, and the twins&Karin who joined the squad later than the others may be the only ones who have no clues.)

As for our antagonists, Cody seems to be a character with mysterious elements. I doubt that he’s just a random kid picked up by Abel.

About the aging of Abel, I guess it’s hard to tell…lol. As I pointed out, Yukimaru just looks so old for his age, and Kei in Yukimaru’s flashback doesn’t look much younger than his present as well (He just had shorter hair back then.) My guess is the grown up male characters in their 20-40 years old in this story won’t look much different though.

I also feel bad for O'Malley. (She got me from that episode in the cave...lol.) Looks like that Abel guy fully knows that she fell for him and tried to make use of it. I'd like to see she gets her revenge if she survives.

I doubt that Yukimaru will die though. His wounds don’t look that severe. He just lost a lot of blood, but the positions are not at any main organs. To make it more realistic, just make him require a proper treatment and a long rest for discovery should be enough.

nevermind I was thinking of a different track
To your other point, there is one track that feels Japanese to me (rather than just "Kajiura"), but maybe that's a stereotype coming from Europe so... uh. It's the one in ep4 when they are in Liebar-Oberstein chief's/grandpa's hut.

Similar thoughts on story. They are setting everything up in a way that it really can go anywhere lol or nowhere... It could be the biggest pile of shite thrown at the wall (to see what sticks) or the most simple and straightforward story ever told in the end... I'm enjoying the ride v much myself.
The biggest shame about the other Pirates getting off'd (as of now at least) is that they really had cool visual designs and flair. The military, and even the Goblins, feel very bland in comparison.

I agree about the pirates, they needed more screen time. That military officer looks like Kiritsugu after the holy grail war ended (see UBW flashbacks,) with hollow stare and empty soul that is obsessed with Fena because he liked her mother.

But should the OST sound east asian tho? Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that the show mostly happens in Western parts of the world (except Goblin Island). So apart from the Samurai Seven (who actually have kind of asian themes with percussion and flute eg swordland and Umi to Shinju reprise...), I'm fine with the rest of the show having western vibes - even if imho it should feature more pirate music (heavy-metal? weird sound design? mandolin, hurdy-gurdy..? I wish Kajiura can come up with a new concept one day cuz FBM is good but it's about time to expand if she wants to remain spearhead)

Kek at Yukimaru on his bark tracing those huge vessels
Not enough vessel fights so far, even if I got some great POTC vibes seeing the vessels drawing closer (did someone say Disney?)

As for the pirates' fate, "it's just good business"

Apart from the those fighters who escort Fena there is nothing that says they re japanese or even asian. They went to Germany and France by ship ! This means its definetely West or it would take months if not year.

I’m not sure whether I misunderstood your comment. I guess that you think I’m not satisfied with the OSTs don’t sound East Asian, which is really not the point. The OSTs I mentioned are those during the German village scene, and there are some comments here saying that they sound like Japanese or Chinese instead of German, but I didn’t feel that when I watched the episode. Those songs feel western to me and I think they’re ok for that scene. That’s why I wrote that paragraph ^ ^ll.

I have, in fact, misunderstood your comment. Glad we're on the same page then ^^
This being said, imo the aforementioned tracks sound european and not american.

Btw I think it's a win for Kajiura if a fan like you didn't recognize her style in the first episodes :)

Oh and actually Fena's hairs just grew during episode 5's ellipsis.
