Yuki Kajiura to compose for Zaregoto OVA

I love this ost. As everyone else has said, the music and sounds are very fresh, and it's very encouraging to see Kajiura expand into new territory.

Each track has something to say and can stand on it's own; they really remind me of her early days in that sense, when she was creating music meant rather than sound cues. I also really appreciate how restrained she was with the emotional tracks.

I think it's really appropriate that KnK is popping up so much in this thread since that anime and this one both revolve around characters who are "empty". I feel like Kajiura really identifies with this type of character considering how much craftsman ship she puts into characterizing them through their leitmotifs.

oh wow! I'm super impressed by the sounds Kajiura created here, it indeed is super fresh and has a deep character of its own. This ost is fabulous if you like atmospheric music but it's great in general. The compositions/arrangements are very complex and very balanced, on par with bee train days I would say (ahha maybe not..)

1. let him tell his story : Kajiura is really into leitmotifs lately! Great opening, and great melody. love the atmospheric synth.
2. old fashioned fairy tale: the vocals are dramatically reduced in this ost. love the violin and beats here.
3. pessimistically, he shows some interest, he has some doubts, he is a bit puzzled, he feels empty, twisted mind, a presentation of mystery, daily life returning to normal : it's very atmospheric and very good at that!! but personally I can't like atmospheric music on its own very much. They are very Silent Hill-like (which has tons of much darker excellent atmospheric music)
4. deep in his heart: typical Kajiura fatezeroesque strings.
5. she is a scholar: I like this track a lot, the cello melody is very good, beats and repetitive piano blend in well.
6. optimistically: wow yes! I love this track.
7. she is a fortuneteller: No instrument in this ost is abused. So the flute is very appreciated here. The beats, synth, violin, flute work beautifully.
8. a sudden fear: typical Kajiura stillness track
9. a courtesy, logical talk: boring but could be used as a background music for relaxation music or sth. /typical cello track.
10. a metaphysical talk : super nice piano beats track. again the leitmotif :)
11. a momentary exchange: nice calming track with nice sound effects.
12. a composition of opposition: like this one.
13. first think a detective does: love it!
14. reconstructing full picture: I don't like the vocals here too much, I think overall they feel distracting in the ost.
15. one more mystery: oooo love this one!! great beats, synth mystery strings!
16. now he talks again: fabulous. the whole track feels like a story with different epochs.
17. she is the strongest: love love.
18. she puts a question to him: wow same comments as now he talks again but much darker and sad... very sad. at least to me.
19. she solves, by herself: yep love this one too. too much strings at the end unlike other tracks but I welcome it with open arms :)
20. she answers to him: wow yes, incredible opening, incredible beats, strings. though it gets repetitive toward the end but it's ok.
21. she explains, for the happy ending: great guitar, strings, piano. it feels bittersweet than happy to me:)
22. he told his story: same comment as now he talks again.

lots of tracks in bold! overall this ost is much better than Princess Principal. definitely one of the top of the recent works. The ost has so much character and feeling. even the ones not in bold are not bad, it's just too atmospheric for my taste, they are not like random sfx!

congrats Kajiura!

You guys weren't kidding when you said disc2 covered the last episode alone, lol. Anyways, seems like a logical talk and deep in his heart weren't used in the show.

I absolutely love “reconstructing a full picture”, vocals, arrangement and all, but I have to agree that it was distracting. The two if not three times it came up in the show, it was used during super-intense, super-deep dialogue and I was only listening to the song, had to go back to process the dialogue.

I felt bad that I unashamedly took all of the PriPri OST except for espionage trap, battle of the shadows and Mo Hitotsu off my phone to make room for this OST. No shade to PriPri but that guilt went away real fast.

The good point of the ost being a soundtrack that one would/wouldn’t go back to often was brought up. I will say that I will probably only use the general soundtrack during a work time, such as any large art projects (so frequently until mid-December). But outside of that, I certainly wouldn’t skip any tracks during shuffle, except for “a logical talk”. It’s just too much cello without any rhythmic progression.

I think a few people already mentioned it, but daily life, returning to normal heavily reminds me of something from the KnK OST, specfically KnK 5.

I've been listening to this OST a lot over the past few days and it's legitmately great, I'm very pleasantly surprised. I wasn't big on Marchen but I really like the Kajiurago versions here, with my favorite being reconstructing a full picture.
She is the strongest
kinda reminds me of desert music from a Zelda game, but it still also sounds very Kajiura to me. Really like it.
I also love optimism and let him tell his story but the rest of the OST is equally great. There are only a very few tracks that I don't really care for as much.
This is making me want to check out the show too, as I haven't watched an anime in a super long time lol
Anyone know if it's any good or not?

I agree with george, and it’s good to me. Coming from a person that enjoys watching and desires to animate shows with consistent action and emotional plot simultaneously (thus my personal favorite YK ‘go-to’s have been the Mai-s and Madoka Magica), Zaregoto was a nice, unexpected break that required a different mental perspective (accompanied by great and extremely complementary music).
I will say that after the first episode was released, I thought to myself “... I know I’m gonna have to binge this or I won’t be able to follow shit.” So I recommend you set aside a day and do that.

I will write a proper review, probably tomorrow. Listening to it again now. Favorites though: she is the strongest, she answers to him, she is a scholar, she is a fotruneteller is just love. A momentary exchange is really relaxing, like a combination of Hanako and Pandora Hearts. He shows some interest sounds like it's from Bleach. lol Same beginning of the song, but I like it. The main theme songs got a little repetitive, for my taste anyways. And there were a couple of SFX ones I did not care for, but the rest are pretty great. I love her celtic and middle eastern tracks always, pretty much. I do like the use of citar in this soundtrack though, very cool.

Does anyone have the opening in full? I quite like it.

Would've typed Kalafina if it said Kalafina.

Edit: Don't think it's that serious. It's not a song (there's Marchen for that). It doesn't have to say Kalafina. So happens it features all 3 girls in it...

YK live? What's that?

lol but it did say Kalafina in some of the KnK OSTs

@yuki.n has told me Kajiura has said many times on twitter that she wants to start doing them again.
(she's probably recovering from that cancellation... ^^;)
Personally i think its a good thing she stopped since we can now see that she's clearly focusing more on the music quality.

Sure. I just don't think it's that serious or live copyright issues (hello, Houseki). Not to mention for the longest time back then Kalafina was supposed to be exclusive to KNK from what we heard.

Edit:
So why did you change the credit to Kalafina instead of keeping the 3 individual girls like in the booklet?

By the way, the 2 songs have seperate credits (well, Marchen does, the opening does not have any musicians listed - only composer/arranger/lyricis).

Finished watching Zaregoto today, and as some people said, most of the tracks - and the best ones - are all in the last episode. But it's an overall very solid OST, really enjoyable, I'm impressed. The music is probably the only reason I kept watching though, because it's quite a slow anime at the beginning and I only got really into the story at episode 6 (out of 8...). The last episode is truly awesome, in terms of plot, voice acting, and music.
So happy with this soundtrack by Kajiura :dote:

Because that's what they are. They've never sang separately except Wakana in soundracks (and in that LiSa live), and FJ doesnt get to sing for Sony brands, so why hide the fact when its in front of us ? :) they may had their reasons they didnt put "Kalafina" but i have no reason to copy them exactly.
