Members of the Press:

Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale, based on the smash hit light novel series published by KADOKAWA’s Dengeki Bunko boasting worldwide sales of 19 million copies, is set for its global premiere in spring 2017.

In partnership with the KADOKAWA CORPORATION, Skydance Media, a U.S.-based diversified media company, has acquired the worldwide live-action rights for Sword Art Online.

Having already spawned a comic book series, two TV anime adaptations, and video games, and with its first theatrical film, Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale, set for worldwide release in spring 2017, this marks Sword Art Online’s first foray into live-action television. It will be developed as a TV series based on the storyline of the original series.

With screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis (Avatar, Shutter Island, Terminator Genisys) on board to pen the pilot episode, all bases seem to be covered for the live-action launch. In addition to the TV series, Skydance Media is planning a Sword Art Online virtual reality experience through Skydance Interactive.

Original author Reki Kawahara, live-action screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis, and Skydance Media CEO David Ellison have all commented on the launch of the live action adaptation.

Please look forward to the launch of the live-action Sword Art Online series, following the movie, Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale, set for its global premiere in spring 2017.

Please release the news of this announcement and this title to your media outlets.
Thank you very much.

Reki Kawahara’s comments:
I am excited and moved that ‘Sword Art Online’ will be adapted into a live action series by the highly respected Skydance Media. I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation and gratitude to everyone involved in this project, and to the fans all over the world who have so generously and enthusiastically supported SAO.

Laeta Kalogridis’s comments:
For years I have been inspired by the inventive and masterful storytelling of the SAO franchise. I’m thrilled to get the opportunity to work with such talented partners to bring this cutting-edge yet timeless story to a new format at Skydance..

David Ellison’s comments:
At Skydance we are in the business of world-building and SAO is a massive pop-culture phenomenon from which we plan to launch a full-scale and wide-ranging set of live action franchise extensions across our business verticals, beginning with television.
We look forward to working alongside Laeta, Reki Kawahara, and the teams at KADOKAWA and Aniplex to build out a deeply immersive new universe of SAO in an authentic way that honors its well-established fan base around the globe.

Hoping that since they announced this in the anime movie website, maybe they will reuse the anime musics for the live action.

How in the heck are they going to do this? I mean, I know technology and special effects, sure, but it could be really bad because of the whole fairy themed story line. I mean I guess they can give it a shot, but I think the fans are not going to like this very much. But yeah, probably reuse or someone new compose for, I am not sure the Kenshin live actions were the same composer.

The important detail here is that this live action will be done by an american company. They have more experience with special effects in live action movies (Holywood and all), so i think they can pull it.

I don't even know that SAO is that big all over the world that they're going to make a live action series. After the first cour I just lost all interest.

Wait WHAT?
Well, maybe I could give a try to this TV serie (I dropped the original SAO on half the first season). Hopefully it will have less filler and more action, epic scenes.
And of course, I wish they keep Kajiura-sama as a musician. And I hope she composes a real masterpiece for it (I mean SAO OST was good, but only good), since it would be one of its bigger opportunities to spread her music around the world. But if it's an american company producing the series, probably they'll get an american composer.

the synth brass at the beginning isn't new? not that I'm any expert on sao music..
can't believe they used that awful chorus track , false king or whatever it was called.

whatever. out of all the music, they choose that and false king for the trailer. not surprised.

yeah but I mean there are houuurs of music composed for sao and for a trailer they chose weak tracks like that. maybe for trailers it's ok but there are other better music in sao than those two.

i guess we've discussed enough about sound direction trailer and anime wise for so long that it's not surprising at all.

I'd be more surprised if the trailer used good music since SAO completely lacks any semblance of it from what I recall.
