That's actually common. I don't remember where I stashed it, but I saw the pic elaborating on Haruhi Suzumiya backgrounds which have loads and loads of references to real places. And it's not limited to anime, AFAIK.

The crazy thing was that I've watched The Girl Who Leapt Through Time several times and didn't realise the resemblance when I visited the Tokyo National Museum.
