better images for picky George :)
here's my review:
1) ok I love the bagpipes. I love this track, especially the second half. I think this track is so grand and elegant, it could have been used in Braveheart.
2) nice happy song.
3)Endless Echoes - love the trumpet at the end. used a lot in the series, but it can stay fresh.
4) ok guys, clarinet here rules.
5)piano solo track in this soundtrack don't bother me which is a very good thing and unexpected. still simple in its composition but works.
6) love this too. the middle guitar section is gorgeous.
7) interestingly I don't see the credits to this one. I think I like this song.
8)overall nice strings but I could do without it.
9) now this is generic Kajiura. definition of minimalist new-age. still good.
10) Accident! - why is this in English? ok this sounds familiar but the bitter determination is well conveyed in percussion + strings.
11) meh. it's not bad but clearly it's done for the convenience of sad scenes.
12)My Story #2 - same as 9.
13) same as Liana's comment.
14) same as 13
15)such a bgm
16) delightful. again so simple and elegant.
17) trumpet may feel overwhelming but still great.
18) Tokyo days - right clarinet and trumpet rule. the guitar in the middle is great too. definitely one of favs.
19) same as 15
20)My Wings - one of favs. esp. percussion
21) again simple but love the dulcimer.
22) was waiting for this one! the orchestration is sublime. very well-written imo.
23) beginning motif sounds very Kajiura to me? again bgm.
24) same as 18 minus trumpet.
25) sounds like one of the happier songs in Mai-Hime. like the combo of percussion, guitar, flute.
26) For Ever and Ever - another piano-solo that doesn't bother me.
27) you think it will go on silly as it starts but it turns into a happy march. like it.
28) same as Liana
29) really beautiful. this took me by surprise very much. orchestration is again truly great. clarinet rules.
30) same as 15, still good bed-time relaxing music.
31) really nice. this one stands out as unique from others I think in a way.
32) same as Liana.
33) exactly the same as 29. This reminds me of the composer
Georges Delerue (maybe time for another thread in Otakuland!) which says a lot.
34) same as Liana. utter joy. there is actually a piano version of this!! coming to sora's comment, it could have been merged with this one, making a whole track.
35) relaxing though nothing spectacular. I imagined it would be much better but this one was written fast imo.
I think what happened is we experienced a bit of a shock from the first ost and expected the variety and freshness of the ost1 here. Frankly, it feels there is enough variety here, if not as much as in ost1, especially with the use brass and pipes. Putting variety aside, what I value most here is the orchestration. The tracks I highlighted were very well-written ihmo and took me by surprise since this is what I wanted Yuki to do, delve into orchestral elements more and combine them with world-music instruments :) Apart from the usual filler tracks, this ost delivers and makes me hunger for more. I would put this ost on the same level as the first one excluding the shock I mentioned.
I feel the bgm issue too. The absence of tracks that can be used for a single scene only is a problem with drama shows like Hanako to Anne but for me, it's not an absolute necessity. One can only wish for more collab with NHK.
