Songs that were not love at first sight

Sandpiper.

I remember listening through After Eden the first few times and never picked up on it at all. It's not that I didn't like it, I just didn't really notice it was there somehow.

Fast-forward to watching the After Eden live and it came on... and I was amazed by it. Needless to say, it's become one of my favourite Kalafina songs since then, not to mention easily my favourite of the album.

Seventh Heaven
Once again, this wasn't something that really stood out to me for quite a while. The rest of the album had so many standout moments; Ongaku, Oblivious, Sprinter, ARIA, Serenato etc. that I guess I was too busy focussed on those. One time I remember waking up to it though, and it was a rather lovely thing to wake up to. I've since listened to it quite a few times.

I'm kinda hoping it happens to some of the remaining tracks from Consolation, actually. I'm already sold on most of it, but there's a couple of tracks on there I just don't listen to much. Same goes for Mirai and Hikari Furu I guess, but I doubt I'll ever 'like' them, just stop disliking them. I do wonder if I'll ever get to like Eden, too.

^Oh, Sandpiper! I totally forgot to mention it. Had the same experience. Didn't really see what was so moving/powerful about it until I saw the After Eden live performance. Partially 'cause I find the live version better, partially 'cause that song just worked better live, I guess.

I have a love/hate relationship with... Ongaku. Based on what I have read in other threads, it feels it is an overperformed song in lives but, likewise, it is one of their signature songs. My issue with this song is that the recorded version (i.e., Seventh Heaven) and the lives feel completely different, as if the song was bi-polar! For example, the live version feels more energetic (specially at the beginning, when Keiko does the shout out) and shows a bit of the band members; however, at the same time, I wished they stopped the Kajiurago and let the band members shine (I think this was "resolved" in the 5th Anniversary Live). The recorded version lacks these but, still, it can be listening by itself fine, yet I wished there was more.

Manten. The first time I heard it, it felt tragic/sad. But, after finding the context of the song and what was used for, it made more sense and started to enjoy it.

Zodiacal Sign: This is a case of unknowingly listening it enough times that is starting to be catchy!

Well, this is an ooooold thread, but um, cazador del amore by Yuuka is one of the songs I did not like at first, but then I heard the Live Vol 11 version of it and was blown away. Though still not one of my favorites, I can listen to it now. (I did like el cazador, which is weird, since it's just the Spanish version.) Also signal, by Kalafina, but I only liked the live from ACen, which was awesome. (The one in consolation live was okay too.)

Really? Cadazor del Amor is hands down my favourite FictionJunction related song and has been for ages. Yuuka's vocals are sublime.

Recent addition to this for me is Hikari Furu. I never have cared much for Sagitta Luminis and the vocal version didn't do much to help it, I've always found it kinda dull and thought it was nothing special. Then they played it live at Japan Expo. I cried, god damn it. Every time I hear it now I just get overly emotional and can't focus on anything but the vocals. I think it's safe to say it's finally clicked for me.

I had a similar problem. Sagitta Luminus was always a really boring piece to me so when Kalafina covered it I was really down. But one day, I listened to it on a drive home and it clicked. Mirai unfortunately will never click with me. I don't know why, Credens Justitiam is one of my favorite songs from madoka.

I've never liked Credens Justitiam either, which made the Hikari Furu single really quite disappointing for me. I don't dislike Mirai as much as I used to but I still usually phase out whenever I'm listening through Consolation and it comes on.

For me all of Yuki's songs were not love at first sight. I listen to them a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th time and grow to love them more and more. An example is "elemental". When I first listened to it I thought that it sounded really weird, but now it's my no. 1 favourite song. I'm not sure if it's the same for everyone, but songs that are instant likes get boring to listen to over time...

^There are some songs that have gotten only a little boring, but mostly when I first hear a song, and think, this is amazing, (Kajiura or not) I want to listen to it a lot right away. lol

@Kowz, oh, sorry, lol I have not listened to it in awhile.

Seasonreaper: Yeah, that and Romanesque did not do much for me, but the live versions are great. And it was the same with me for paradise regained, I wondered what song they were playing in the live vol 10 (I think it was) when paradise regained started, since I skipped a bit and did not read the title, then I heard the beautiful singing, it's a bit faster than the original, so I loved it, but then I listened to the original and thought, wow, the FJ version is way better. I do like their credens justitiam too. (Mirai is okay, I can see why some people don't like it, it does go on a bit longer than credens, but I like Hikaru's sweet voice in it.)

@a-chan : No, songs that were love at first sight/hear don't get boring for me. oblivious and ARIA are my very first Kalafina songs and they remain in my top 10 until now - I heard it when they only have like, around 20 songs (before Red Moon) and now they have around 50. I forgot if I have posted about this or not, but Akatsuki no Kuruma is on my not love on first sight list. The studio version is somewhat boring for me, but the live vol.4 version is sooo lovely I grew to like it. There are songs that was instadislike but I grew to like/tolerate those songs (most of After Eden songs) and there are songs that I skip all the time/dont put on my playlist because they simply don't do it for me. storytelling (I still don't know why Kajiura write this shit), Haru wa Kogane (snorefest), heavenly blue, and sandpiper (nice vocal delivery but the arrangement is zzz) are on this list.

@Liana_Ilia & @ritardando : I'm envious! For me songs that are easy to like, for example those played repetitively on radio stations (eg. One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful" or Bruno Mars' "Just The Way You Are"), they get boring for me after a while, and I skip them altogether :ohoho:

I first encountered Kalafina by my dislike for sprinter actually . Watching YK vol 2 I fell in love with the voices. I then saw Kalafina which was also a brainchild of YK so I listened to the sprinter PV. And I just didn't like the song. The song sounded generic ( minus the kajiuran) and for me Hikaru was too nasal -something which se has drastically improved over the years!
Eventually I got into the oblivious remix and upon realizing in that was a remix, I found the seventh heaven album and from there it took off.

Now I do like hearing sprinter live. But it's not often played on my play list.

I found Hikari Furu really vapid before listen it to live. Now, it just brings me tears.

For a back-catalogue song, I find that Sprinter is performed quite often. It's the only one of the Seventh Heaven era that was performed last week (for my greatest pleasure), among only 7 newer songs.

I just was listening to some of the el cazador songs again, 'just a small fry' is one of the ones I did not like at all, but now probably because it resembles some Detective Conan (which uses a lot of sax) songs, I like it. I will never like 'the ballad of a bounty hunter' or 'a bounty hunter's murmur' though. Though I like the beginning of the ballad one, since it sounds cool. (Off track: Something I noticed, sight your gun sounds a lot like some the sfx ones in GGO, so far at least.) And for a Kala song, I guess I never really liked Yami no Uta (but liked Hoshi no Utai, which I thought was weird) at first, but then saw the live on Red Moon Live I think, and really really loved it.
