It did sound like Koyasu's a character.
Maybe they intend to pull off a trick similar to Lucky Star (remember Minoru Shiraishi?).
Or maybe Koyasu will be a plain bakeneko, but his role will be to comment and narrate. If he really turns out to be a character eponymous to his CV, that might be a possibility.

EDIT: OMG this actor voiced Excalibur himself!

I, too, am lookinfg forward to know more about the songs. Just let's not get overexcited - it will end in MAJOR disappointment if Yuki is not invloved, after all.

A story outline:

"Madoka, an ordinary second year of Third Takihara Junior High; one day, a girl named Homura that looks exactly as she appears in Madoka's dream transferred to her school. From that meeting with a miraculous girl, Madoka have to stand against her new fate as a magical girl."

Huh, so the things start rolin' with Akemi, after all.
If she was the one directly connected to Madoka's "conversion", it might explain that Madoka chose the same kind of weapon.
But that may also mean theat Kyube contract thing is either introduced later, or does not have any relation to Akemi and Madoka and may be exclusive to Mami. This sounds curious, as we may get to see several magical girl coalitions at work.

Aha, looks like the actual in-show designs revealed. Well, I like what I see. And they don't even look as wide-faced as in the initial art. On the other hand, it's a magazine crop-out, and it may not be provided by the original character designer (I mean not Aoki-san, but that guy who's supposed to convert designs for actual animation).

The story sounds very promising... I'm really looking forward to this show now.

Looks like Kalafina is going to sing the OP. The title is Magia.
The single will went on sale on February 16, 2011. Limited edition will include a DVD.
Source is pretty uncertain at this point, but the poster said he got it from Shinseido.
(That means Sony Music Entertainment will be the one producing music.)

i'm sure that no matter how it turns out, the opening SHAFT makes for the show will be a hundred times better than the actual PV. maybe they'll even throw in a lamp or two! can't imagine the song being cutesy, though.

Well Mahou Shoujo doesn't always mean cutesy... remember Nana Mizuki and Nanoha series

We don't know if it turns out to be cutish. Cutish songs are a given in sweeter and cuter magical girl variety (although Kamichama Karin is close to the genre, and its OP is far from cutish ). Of course, there are also "cute" songs like Dai Mahou Touge OP. But it's assumed do far that Madoka will be action-driven, like Nanoha or PreCure. I didn't hear PreCure music, but MGLN manages to feature both cute songs by Yukari Tamura and serious songs by Nana Mizuki.

Anything is possible. I got to see Saya no Uta (one of the previous works Gen Urobuchi worked on), and now predicting how Madoka will turn out almost makes me scratch a hole in my head. And don't forget the name of AKIYUKI "mushroom garden" SHINBO. I don't know how I'll manage to wait a whole month to see this.

Actually there is some pre-announcement sequence featured on the site as well (the one with darker elements). I failed to load it all, but the first seconds of the clip hinted at a very peculiar and by no means jazzy style. You can't really get an impression of Yuki's ost from ONE melody.

Image may become an artistic prison for a band. Obviously Yuki doesn't want the girls to be locked in the same style, and it may apply to the image as well. And Hikari no Senritsu was a cute song, IMO.
