Wild guess, but your browser probably had to do stuff for HTTPS Authentication - which will cache usually, but that cache only lasts so long.
 
^ Thanks, that was probably it, not sure why it should take so long (the initial page load took a few minutes on a 13 Mbit/s down, 2 Mbit/s up ADSL2+ connection with no other traffic).
