Kaori Oda solo + collabs (non-YK / non-Sound Horizon)

live vocals from about 18:40 (Kaori Oda, Kahori Asoh, SAK)
Our Kaori Oda really shone when her solo session came up starting around 1:37:19 (though almost going a bit off a few times), but I was kinda impressed by Kahori Asoh's starting lead. Her voice was nice and quite stable pitch-wise, and her control and expressions during the live were cool too. A classic Japanese-style voice in many ways (she's sung in musical theatre - Disney inclusive - for a while). 1:48:34 for a little taste of her pure high soprano harmony goodness (reminiscent of Yuriko/Joelle in terms of purity and cut, sweet)! She was also around 52 years old in the live which I wasn't expecting when I checked her out online.

SAK has sung with Sound Horizon 7.5th or 8.5th Story: Ema Ni Negai Wo! (絵馬に願ひを!) and is a verified vocalist too.

1:56:00 Dance breakout by Kahori! Also unexpected. She got some moves!
2:00:42 For a comparison of Kaori and SAK jumping to a C5 and the differences in vocals.
2:01:30 For a beautiful 2-voice harmony flowing under the lead. They REALLY blended well together. Wow!
2:0437 Unexpected action vocal section. Nice.

They could actually be a unit of quite stable of vocalists. I enjoyed their work together and interaction and colors.

Sorry went into a bit of a rabbit hole not exclusively on Kaori.

I have listened to Blue Love Letter and as I said, Kaoris old Group had kinda good singers albeit Kaori is still the best among them. I always wonder if they had been more well known, if it would kinda helped her as I am of the opinion that she is a natural center of any music group.

Queen Kaori. I always say it that Kaori was ahead of many of her peers vocally, style-wise and vitally in stage confidence.
A natural performer.
I would say that i think that Maria sometimes seems to up her since she was great even with 13 years old, but Kaoris versatility has an edge over her.

Huh.... Is one of the girls the female member of Garnidellia (or what's their name)?

I didn't realize that she was the one you were comparing to Kaori.
Yes, i think its interesting that despite both starting in the same group their solo carreers have taken different success, Maria is now one of the most prolific anison singers alongside Lisa, Aimer, Luna Haruna, Eir AOi and Konomi Suzuki, whereas Kaoris solo carreer only consist of a few singles and 5 albums that could not reach even top 50.

In my opinion someone can only be famous if that person fulfills the possibility to promote themself. There are 3 conditions that can help, but either are not necessary to come together (you can only have 2 of them) or not sufficient enough in itself. These 3 conditions are "physical attractiveness", "performance ability" and "personality". Kaori fulfills to a degree all 3, but here promotional management is not the best to put it kindly. She is beautiful and cute, although a bit on some departments would not been that bad, she is a highly developed singer and despity having some key problems, she still is above most Jpop singers, although she is not good at dancing but wc, and she is outgoing, expressive and charismatic, but she never promoted herself in a way that more people got interested in her. I always believe singing songs for more popular shows and making more tours or better pvs would have helped, but now she is already 36 and married and when she get her child and goes for some years on maternity leave then the chances of her that her solo success would match her talent will slim down.

I see your points and agree with you that (with my obviously limited knowledge) it seems the branding hasn't seemed to be the most effective for positioning her as a compelling solo artist. I would add the music as well. It's like she's been trying to stand out in a style that isn't always suited to her vocal style.

She's been promoted as a regular JPop singer (in the few MVs I've seen) with the cuteness and looks being highlighted. That is the usual combo for JPop singers - cuteness and high singing voice. The thing is that Kaori's potential not the usual JPop style. I consider her having more of a character/theme singer than just a pop ballad artist. I will admit I am biased visually towards the Sound Horizon days and recall some of the acting/singing elements.

I have come to imagine a heavier theme and branding for her. Music that's pop but with a metal tinge, not straight poppy - more dramatic. It would have been something she would need to embody willingly though. Her heavier belts could go with the heavier guitars and syncopated elements. She could be a sort of Anneke van Giensbergen-style singer. It's more niche, but I think it's more suited to her voice and physique.

I also feel like anisong is a core path to generalized mainstream fame unless you're at the level of the classic pop divas like Utada Hikaru, etc.. Part of that kind ofƒsuccess is just being born at a beginning of the wave in culture and being able to speak directly to it with your music, lyrics, branding, and a unique and commanding personality, aka the phenomenon called "Ado".

Again, JUNNA is like Kaori being a belter and having a wide range as well. Her work with the "Magus Bride" anime she's been singing for, is the kind of thing I feel Kaori could sing, but not as a one-off. As a brand. To compare, Keiko is just starting to lean into the dark/moody/sultry low-voice crooner image that so many have had of her from the Kalafina days, after going through a period of trying everything that she was presented by her team.

Not everyone has a manager/team that can see a clear place that fits them to fill in the music landscape then aggressively push their branding/music into that space. But they also need to be very ambitious and equally ready to put in the work to get it done for the length of a career.

I think it is beautiful for Kaori to get married and raise a family if that is what she wants. I am 100% behind that decision for her. I do think she has a strong NEED to sing and keep singing. Maybe she'll find a happy middle ground to keep doing that as she changes gears in life.

I for myself am a Kaori Fan since 2013, so to speak since the release of her first SOlo-Album (I became a Fan of japanese music around 2011 and had to go through some musicians and if i had not liked Yuki i would have had problems with becoming a fan of Kaori. In the over 10 Years in that I was a Kaori fan and in which I could get every possible song from her I managed to find atleast one song of which I believed that many people would like. I have made a List of my top songs of her. I also loved her songs with the Harajuku BJ Girls (Chix Chicks) as far as I could find them. Sadly most of them are gone. The only thing that prevents me from being a full-blown Fan is that I have nothing physically of her as an artist (Merch, Albums, CDs etc...)

Well first of all, congratulations as a Kaori fan to her good (official) news of a baby on the way! I hope part of the growth is a new lease on her musical expression and identity.

I think I can understand what you're saying. Her career seems buried somewhat. She doesn't post regularly to a mainstream social media channel. No IG (almost every other person in FictionJunction, past and present. has an IG except Kajiura herself - Keiko, Wakana, Yuriko, Joelle, Eri, REMI, rito, LINO, Kokia, The Kasahara, Hikaru, etc.), and several have YouTube as well! Kaori was just on LINE at a time, I think.

She is very comfortable on stage with an audience and obviously loves singing. It still baffles me why she hasn't taken advantage of the recent years of Kajiuran success to promote herself and intentionally do duets with people.

She knows Haruka Shimotsuki and has access to Joelle and everyone else. It would have been fun to build up some hype on YouTube, restart her radio show on YouTube, and do guest lives on her channel and also visit other channels. If she used references to her past with Sound Horizon I am sure fans from there would seek her out as well.

I gotta admit I went into a bit of a rabbit hole with Maria on her IG, watching a lot of her videos especially on that Chinese show she went several months back, where she represented Japan and won! She has a nice vocal sound and good low notes like Kaori.

It would be nice to have a duet with the two of them after all these years, but she's a much bigger star now, so maybe they're not really close like back in those days.

There were sometimes pics of them both together but I also do not think that it will come so soon of them both making a duet. I still have hopes that if Kaori is able again to go live there would be a Duet with her. The vocals of them both are strongly similar but I think that Maria has a weaker belt than Kaori, but goes deeper in her voice

I think I agree with your points on their voices though I would need to check the lowest notes available for the both of them to conclude on that specific point. Kaori has both a strong belt and sometimes goes almost to a musical "yell" - that's when she tends to go off. That's why I think Kaori needs more hard rock/metal singing opportunities so she can express that heavier/wilder side of her vocals at times. Kajiura's music is more orchestral/pop so that kind of vocal doesn't sit well within her songs.

It would be good for Kaori and Maria to duet just once, even if it's during a livestream like Kaori/Keiko or Keiko/Hikaru.

In watching her more Jazz influenced songs and her vocal texture she always came to me as an old school western pop artist in the body of a japanese woman. Her style is so strong influenced by singers like Ella Fitzgerald, the supremes, Donna Summer and other singers from the 70s and 80s. Ironically these kind of songs are the ones I like the most of her, but also the ones she performs less than the otome ballads.

I don't know where I read that she listened to stuff like Tina Turner's. Maybe that's where my bias of her singing to rock music comes from. Though I do feel she's more like an edgier pop singer.

In my mind, one duet I would like is Kaori and Eliana from Sawano Hiroyuki's music. They are both taller ladies with strong belts and fairly wide ranges.

She is really an edgier pop singer. Her voice is a bit too strong for the typical Jpop although most of Yukis singers have an edge over the average Jpop Singer. There are some exceptions even among idols (I must think of former Morning Musume Member Ai Takahashi as an example).
