The day Kajiura talked about her emotions regarding this matter on FJS radio, I couldn't help but felt deeply how 寂しい everything made her.
It seems like her initial reaction on Twitter was about not losing face, since it seemed that SC really wanted that to happen, one way or another.
I listened to the audio and she said the right things to settle the tensions but it was obvious she was hurt. It's not a good addition to her legacy.
One thing I hugely notice is Wakana’s vibrato.
Yeah, that vibrato. It was manufactured, rather than emanating from a healthy, supported head voice.
I don’t mean to be rude but she sounded like a goat in some parts.
That kind of "vibrato" is spoken of in similar terms in classical pedagogy, and as a wrong way to do it. I don't think she's trying to sound bad, and she definitely knows her voice has changed, but she just can't do it healthily and seemed to be trying to force it (essentially manufactured). I would have preferred if she went breathy straight falsetto instead. Actually change the vocal instead of trying to still do as if she can sing in that range. There were a lot of held notes by her and Hikaru where I was hoping they would just cut off because their voices were so out of shape to do it like they used to.
In a live performance however, Fictionjunction stands out to me more now.
There's no doubt, comparing apples to apples. FJ/FBM is
carrying the torch for Kalafina's music in terms of covering it at a high level, vocally and musically.
I am hoping for some acoustic covers of Kalafina songs during the upcoming Jump Out! live - simplified for fewer singers! [Edit: Joelle/Yuriko duet(!); Shuri backed up by both of them; possibilities!]
One thing Kajiura was able to achieve with her YKL/KajiFes covers is having the breadth of quality live singers so as to not need to use much, if any, backing tracks. Joelle and Yuriko were doing most of those little spicy Kajiurago mini-sections virtually live! I mean YKL17 "Sprinter" was the eye-opener for me, with Yuriko doing those higher soprano harmonies in person, instead of as a disembodied voice above Wakana's live singing.
It would have been nice if Yuriko actually got to do it with Wakana together with Keiko and Hikaru, but I think part of the
mystique/branding of Kalafina is that it's just the 3 of them on stage (WKH is Kalafina), so there's no way to incorporate Yuriko being on stage with them (or Hanae, or whoever supported the studio version of the songs). This means FJ is the only place where we can get an expanded, full vocal arrangement and performance of Kalafina songs, live!
It's a real auditory treat for Kajiura fans to hear her intended vocal landscape fully (or mostly) live, and she should never stop covering Kalafina. Kajiura needs to
keep showing how it's done. (
A possibly weird analogy is how software companies - Microsoft, Google - can license out their OS to other phone/PC hardware makers but also make their own phones to showcase the intended standard).
