Yuki Kajiura LIVE vol.#8

I don't think that the full orchestra like Joe Hisashi's 25 years with Hayao Miyazaki concert had is needed... even what was used for Chihiro Yonekura's performance of Friends (Senkaiden Houshin Engi ED) at Animelo Summer Live 2008 (strings, a few woodwinds and horns) would be good.

Maybe YK doesn't have a trusted orchestrator?

^ I know she's worked with an orchestrator in Hokuto no Ken, Rekishi Hiwa Historia, Tsubasa, and a few other OSTs (but I can never remember his name). Although he's credited with "string support", she's apparently used him only when she needs help arranging large string pieces. I always thought that she could easily arrange pieces for smaller string ensembles on her own, too, though there's really no proof of that...

It seems as though she doesn't feel the need to use many brass instruments, since she's even substituted synthesized versions in a few OSTs, like Elemental Gelade. But even so, that doesn't explain why she uses Akagi Rie only as a special guest in her concerts, since Rie's virtually her main flutist.

^We need Tokyo Konsei as well for a dream DVD :psst:
Oh true! If they had Tokyo Konsei, Hanae, Yuri and Eri, I wouldn't even need the other girls :ohoho:
+1... :XD:

I still wonder WHY she doesn't have a cellist for her shows. I mean, many of her songs call for a cello (even viola) and yet what we have most of the time is pre-recorded cello (or not even that) and sometimes violin in its place (definitely not the same thing). Other artists that are less known than her manage to have one with them, so what's the reason behind this?
I suppose that you said for the live performance. I think she need the full orchestra/cello/viola for only some songs, and it may be too much to spend for them just to use them in a few songs. Having a violist/cellist or string quartet as guests sounds more reasonable. (Having the whole orchestra as a guest sounds a bit ridiculous...thinking that how much time the orchestra need to set up everything for the performance...if they coming just for a few songs and left...huh...? How would you feel if you're one of the orchestra member..- -"...)

Besides..., for the string quartet (also for viola+cello)..we know that she uses KonnoSan as her YKlive violinist, but usually uses Kido Kiyo's string quartet for OST recording....is it the reason....? :ayashii:

^Yeah, I meant for the lives. I think that at least a cellist would make a big difference, since some songs really like on it rather than just the violin (the same applies for Kalafina lives. I mean, Kimi ga Hikari ni Kaete Iku is rather "bland" live because it relies heavily on cello/viola).

She uses Hitoshi Konno Strings just as much in OSTs, it was just a coincidense that Kiyo Kido did everything in Madoka OSTs (guess they recorded all tracks in 1 time?), so I dont think its that the reason.

I actually like the live Kimi ga Hikari much better, mainly because of the guitar (the final chord kills me) and the harmony in the penultimate chorus before Wakana's solo :spotlight:

I'm definitely the opposite. What I like about Kimi ga is exactly the cello/viola, they add so much to the melancholy present in the song (especially in the Keiko's solo after the first chorus). I also miss the cello in ARIA, although I like the live version. And Mata Kaze and so many others lol

^ I think you and I have pretty different tastes about a lot of songs! Plus you've seen the KnK movies, so I suppose the song is linked to the series and not just Kalafina because of that...

I guess I can say I'm not that fond of how Kajiura uses eletric guitars, she is really not the composer I look forward to when guitars are concerned (even thought I love eletric guitars). In that aspect our tastes differ greatly XD

^ Well, I'm just biased because of Koichi-san anyway. Back before I became a fan of his, I didn't like songs with heavy electric guitar in them, even those from Kajiura-sensei. Now I'm practically headbanging :XD:

Anyway, back on topic, I'm still naively hoping that a string quartet will appear for a FJ live...

^ I don't think a composer should constrain her musical expression by space problem on stage. Especially Kajiura is very acoustically driven composer...Its the job of stage design and management people

As for orchestra, I don't think that's always feasible. Some songs are designed for orchestral performances. But some aren't so much. It will just feel weird when a originally very rock-ish song goes orchestra. (Think about synchronicity without all the techno bangs and heavy electric guitars) Not to mention they need to rearrange the songs completely.
See this: JAM project goes symphonic. They basically reinvent their songs.

Thought some extra violin/cello is more than welcome. I think she has enough song to invite a string quartet as part of musician team (Instead of guest musician, like Akagi).
And its not like Yuki has no connection with any celloist...

The only problem I can think of is their budget...FlyingDog is not production company with the most budget...

I think a string quartet would be better for Kalafina, mostly because the concert has a higher chance of being released.

I hope Yuki reconsiders using string quartet in live performances in the future.
