martyr is a greek word (http://www.in.gr/dictionary/lookup.asp?Word=martyr&x=0&y=0)

and is the one who gets tutured killed and/or killed for him idea (in the case you methion kerahna the suicide bombers kill themselves "for the sake of their country" and by believing that then they will go to the Heaven) but the first martyrs were those christians who got turtured and killed on the Cross because they didnt wanted to change from being Christians (roman era)
