)...How exactly does vibrato work and do all of Yuki's singers use it (and I just don't notice), or only Yuriko + opera singer ladies?

As far as I know, vibrato occurs naturally, and it happened if the singer uses a proper singing technique so they can singing while relaxing they vocal apparatus. Vibrato most likely happened when a singer using they usual singing voice / diaphragm voice (?) and it seems between all Kajiura-singers, only Yuriko who can show her vibrato clearly. Wakana mostly using her head voice all the time, and Keiko using chest voice, sometimes produced vibrato, but chest voice main use mostly for the vocal resonance that I really adore from her. Don't know, I don't really understand this matter of singing and I am not that fond into vibrato, because sometimes a singer use his/her vibrato too much that it was annoying.

It's a singing technique (also used when playing string instruments, btw haha) where you hear that the singer doesn't finish their notes normally but with a certain sound that's like a vibration (hence the name). I've heard all of Yuki's vocalists use it since I'm pretty sure all of them have received vocal training, except maybe Asuka in Everlasting Song, but Yuriko's is the most noticeable one, especially because she doesn't use it only to end her phrases but in other parts as well.
You can identify it at the end of phrases, especially when the girls are belting a long note, since short notes don't give you enough time to produce the effect unless you're Yuriko
Yuuka's vibrato is also really noticeable and beautiful, try listening to it in the chorus of Akatsuki no Kuruma live to hear it, particularly in the last note of the first "Sayonara" of the stripped down chorus. If you want, I can find more specific examples for you too :)

Vibrato can either be a blessing or a curse. I'm not particularly fond of it when the note is short.

Yeah, me neither, that's why Yuriko's solo mini album doesn't do much for me, sounds like her voice isn't stable and kind of shaky although I know it's not the case.

@ritardando Wow..I haven't known about vibrato in this aspect....coz it's a basic technique in Thai traditional songs (which I usually listened to and sang in my childhood), it's a kind of a natural thing for me to sing in that way.
In fact, I think that the traditional songs of some Asian countries also have vibrato as a basic technique. Ex. Thai, Indian, Korean, and also Japanese itself. (not sure about Chinese..but I think they may have it as well.)
I think that the proper use of vibrato will give an exact feeling to the song, but if it's too much, it can be so annoying as well...(sounds like the singer can't keep their voices steadily or sth like that.)

As for Yuriko, I think that her vibrato is fine. Just like in Materialise live, I love how her vibrato makes the higher notes don't sound like she's screaming or ear-aching, like Wakana's.... I personally think like KP-X, I like vibrato as long as the notes are not short...

Hikaru uses vibrato as well, but not that clear as Yuriko and Yuuka. Tbh I don't really like Yuuka's, like the one in Kiseki,the "tatakau kagayaki waaaaa~". The vibrato on "wa" is the only part from the song that I really hate,although overall I love the song.

I think all of Yuki's singers use vibrato, as do her musicians (excluding stuff like percussion instruments and strumming guitar).
EDIT: found an exception. It's Only the Fairytale's singer doesn't use vibrato at all (which doesn't hurt the song, so no biggie).

I think that because vibrato can happen on every singer, although there's a practice to make it clearer or to make it out more... But actually I can't really hear Wakana's. I can hear Keiko's in destination unknown and red moon, Kaori's in Hanamori no Oka, Yuriko in most songs, but can't really hear Wakana...but maybe that's just me
