Recommendations for visiting Japan

I don't know if I would have any occasion to share my opinions about culture, because first of the language barrier and then of the "gaijin complex"... Excepted maybe with young girls – if they don't judge me too far from their expectations for a Westerner :XD:

The phrase book looks useful, it can be a good addition to my Android conversation guide!

@Daiima maybe I'm old school but I don't want to have to rely on electronic devices. Showing someone that handbook has helped me at least once (-:.

PS, I gather that you don't have the opportunity to meet Japanese people where you live?

Although I only started going along after my first trip, I've had a lot of fun attending Australia-Japan Association gatherings in Adelaide.

No, here we have very, very little Japanese people, it would be already great if they are 10 of them. In general the Japanese community seems to be pretty weak in France, only in Paris you may find a few hundred of them.

@Kugayama Do you remember how much yen you can bring in cash without have to declare?
and do you know of any concerts happening in Tokyo between April 1-7...?

@juchanx3:

Currency
If you are carrying cash or other means of payment exceeding 1 million yen (*0.1 million JPY in a case that you are bound for North Korea), you are required to declare to Customs.

Some artists like Lisa Komine, Kaori Hikita, Eri Itoh, Rie Akagi list their shows separately on their own sites or own twitter. Let me know if you want more details. (When I saw Lisa Komine it was at a venue that claimed to hold 60 people, but was pretty full with about 50 people in it and was as good as any concert as I had attended in Japan).

If you don't have a friend who can bid/buy tickets for you one service that does this is:

Thanks Kugayama... but I don't know any of them x.x
I searched again and I found this one http://animetas.jp/ticket/live-95177/ - Eir Aoi , April 3 :innocent:

I'm thinking wheter or not I'm going to Kalafina's Spring Concert in Sapporo. I will have to buy flight tickets from Osaka to Sapporo.. for this I'll spend the money I have left, but I am more afraid that I will regret if I won't go considering I will be already in Japan. What do you think?

@juchanx3 I think that a concert outside of the greater Tokyo/Osaka areas would be great, I really enjoyed the atmosphere of seeing Nana Mizuki live in Akita and Aomori in 2012.

And about this Eir Aoi concert... I have friends who live in Japan, but not in Tokyo... and I live in the other side of the world, not sure if the time will be enough and besides that the shipping costs would be immensely expensive.
Could be possible go to place where the concert will be held, two days before and try to buy it directly? It's not far from where I'll be staying.

Could your friends in Japan or http://www.bridge.jpn.com/services/tickets could probably forward your ticket on to your hotel address in Tokyo in time for it to arrive in time for the concert? I've had tickets and CD's sent to my hotel address alright.

Hi @Kugayama
What's the difference between Suica and Pasmo cards?
If I buy the Suica card can I use it to take Narita Skyaccess line?

I am wondering whether I should buy a prepaid sim card or rent a pocket wifi...

@juchanx3 - from Narita airport you can take the JR Narita Express NEX, the Keisei high speed trains or the Keisei regular trains, Pasmo/Suica don't cover the fast trains between Narita and Tokyo but you can either buy a single ticket or check some of the passes listed here:

https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/japantravelfaq#japantraveltransportation

Suica and Pasmo cover the same areas (all of metropolitan Tokyo except high speed airport trains and Shinkansen) - I only really saw Suica machines and passes when I was there. The machines work in both English and Japanese, it takes a little bit longer to get a card in the first place so on my first trip I took a special Keisei train to Nippori then bought a Suica card at Nippori. The vast majority of metropolitan Tokyo stations have Suica machines (which are also handy for breaking a large note and giving change, e.g. put in 10,000 yen, get 1,000 yen top-up and 9,000 yen in change) and they're easy to use to top-up your card and you can use them at some vending machines and convenience stores also. Details: http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/pass/suica.html

Prepaid SIM can be good if you don't have a good roaming agreement and don't need to have your regular mobile number working in Japan, but pocket wifi is generally recommended if you mobile phone or other devices support it and you want to be able to look up information while moving around or use voice over IP like Skype / Line.

See https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/japantravelfaq#japantravelinternet under Prepaid SIM's and Pocket WiFi rentals.

Note that CD Japan has a pocket wifi rental option too if you want to deal with someone that you are familiar with.

Hope that this helps!

To add onto what Kugayama said,

I just came back from Tokyo a few days ago and I also highly recommend a pocket wifi ….. I didn't have one when I was in Japan last year and I really wonder why. lol. You will thank yourself for having one. Note, you should try to book it online a few days in advance.

I rented a pocket wifi... despite it being pricey, I don't wanna get lost there ;__;~

@Kugayama in the end I asked Bridge.jpn to buy the ticket for me! Thank you so much for the link... :plz::hearts:

My friend said she had no money :rain::desksweat::white: credit cards are for what?

Since more and more people want to go to lives, but too lazy to read the guides. Here's a flowchart on what you need to go through.
