Recommendations for visiting Japan

^ The shinkansen now goes to Akita and Aomori, and frequently. The travel agent who is organising this trip has been to Japan 61 times since 1988 so I should be in very good hands.

^ I've added pictures from Akita as well.

Akita has less in the way of English signs - or perhaps it would be more accurate to say that signs are more likely to be in kanji or romaji. I found the fresh food market on a guide map near the station in kanji and romaji as Akita Shiminichiba - the paper map at the hotel and the sign on the actual location were only in kanji.

Still, the people are all very friendly.

I took a Tsugaru limited express from Akita to Aomori:

Aomori and Nikko had very friendly people also.

For my last use of my Japan Rail pass I booked an 18 minute journey from Ueno to Omiya to speed up a journey to Kawagoe.

I've never taken the train from Haneda to Tokyo, but I have from Tokyo to Haneda for my flight back home when I went to Japan last year.

You can check here:
http://www.haneda-airport.jp/inter/en/access/train.html

I took the monorail from Hamamatsucho station to Haneda airport international terminal.

But I'm not sure whether the trains run all the time, or do they only run up to a certain hour like normal trains.

^ Thanks... I'm expecting some more details on hotels and concert venues from my travel agent soon, but it's good to have some idea of where to go.

I'm in Tokyo now... glad to have brought warm clothes (but it can be hot inside), and found a decent cinema guide in today's (Friday) English issue of The Japan Times.

Just visited the train line from Ueda to Benssho Onsen... Summer Wars country.

Also saw the railway museum at Yokokawa.

Highly recommended - JR East Kanto area pass for tourists - 3 days free travel in Kanto area on JR East trains including shinkansen with reservations:

http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/kantoareapass/index.html

I didn't realise that Yokokawa to Takasaki was included (Yokokawa station didn't have very big JR logos on it).

Also to get to Ueda, I should have alighted from the shinkansen at Saku-daira and taken the local train to Komaro then to Ueda and saved money (although it would have taken longer).

Fortunately this has never happened to me, but it happened to the friend of an acquaintance who is atending the second Lisani Live 5 concert:

So we have arrived now...

But jetstar have somehow lost Kate's (but not my) bag. It was a direct flight and we put them on together. And it's really cold.

Hopefully we get it tomorrow sometime as we're leaving for korea the day after that...

So in cold weather, it is certainly appropriate to include warm clothes in what you carry on with you.

^When asked why I was wearing my jacket on the plane and carrying a toothbrush, umbrella and spare set of undies in my hand baggage, I simply replied: "you never know..." in regards to luggage going astray!

I hope your friend's friend was reunited with his/hers!
