Hikaru (aka H-el-ical )

【Concept Album】Seven Deadly Sins【楽曲試聴動画】

Includes snippets of each track. What do we think?

I like Luxuria and Invidia and Avaritia most, Ignavia is cool but too steriotypical.
the rest seem mostly meh. Compared to her Kalafina days or even Helical her voice here has at least 3 filters on each song and dunno who does backing vocals or she records herself twice.

I hope you didn't come to that conclusion just from the snippets! 😉

After watching Keiko's 50 anniversary live, I feel that if anyone met Hikaru for the first time listening to it, they could be forgiven for imagining she was a contralto.

Can we even say her vocal classification has changed in all practicality, and she should just have music written for her that fully reflects her currently comfortable range, instead of pretending she's able to sing as a mezzo (her original classification)?

Hikaru has always impressed me on her range tbh, her lower matches Keiko at times and she had to do Kajuriagos that Wakana did too, for being the "newbie" compared to the other two, she got put to use

Oh yes, she was surely put to use. Kajiura's music is not easy to sing!

Hikaru really doesn't naturally have a heavy or weighty voice, but growing up she was required to sing the music Kajiura was creating, which was anisong and thus often epic, dramatic, and fast tempo. As a result of the vocal abuse/strain, Hikaru's voice has changed to become that dark, dramatic heavy voice type, but not in a healthy way. If one even watches the early Kalafina music, Hikaru was not always comfortable singing at the top of her range for extended periods of time.

I mean, if Kajiura only wrote "Hikaru no Senritsu"-type music for Hikaru in Kalafina, her voice would have been better preserved as she matured over the years.

For comparison, look at Yuuka Nanri. Hikaru's voice was really only slightly weightier than Yuuka's in my view, and Kajiura had to write mostly to Yuuka's voice type in terms of tempo and melody, while still asking her to sing with more power during their studio sessions! Yuuka was more of a gentle-pop-ballad singer.

Keep in mind that Kalafina started as 4 members and Maya had very loud and full voice the kind that later Hikaru was asked to recreate.

I dont know if you have seen this but this is a video of Maya singing sprinter solo in some kind of stream while in karaoke box. It starts at 1:00 mark. https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV14x411e7xL/?spm_id_from=333.337.search-card.all.click

Just imagine how much different the vocal distribution would be if she never left. (There is YKvol#2 footage with her included in too

Aria
https://youtu.be/mPaC3ydJU98? (I find such dirty move that when Maya gets her part near the end they mostly show keiko 🥴)

Kizuato

Different distribution means more variety of voices and less vocal strain on all. In Kizuato with 4, Keiko does backing for Wakana while Hikaru and Maya handle the kajiurago. In 3 members Kalafina this wasnt possible so one or both were switching between main vocals and chorus.

I also feel that early Maya had just a few more techniques than early Hikaru.

Yeah. If all Maya did was take on 50% of Hikaru's overall parts and nothing else, it would have been helpful and she would also bring her own expression to the songs.

I recall commenting about how, in this Aria live, Maya sang a few sections that we would later see Keiko and Wakana sing regularly in later performances (watch to see Keiko or Wakana dancing and yet we had 3-part harmony - Maya was taking either the high harmony or low harmony).
In Kizuato with 4, Keiko does backing for Wakana while Hikaru and Maya handle the kajiurago.
I’ve also commented about how I noticed that Maya was mainly singing the higher head voice and Hikaru was her low harmony also on head voice/falsetto, starting at this point. 👇
