~Oblivious in their YK live 2008 opening act will never be beaten and never be repeated ever again, I guess... Unless they do something significantly good about that...
"I have no idea... lol!" -> really? (So that means I can't have my opinions becase I have no idea..?)
I like Kei's voice, if you ask me... It's usually and normally like a magnet that attracts people... but for the first time, it didn't attract me... something's definitely wrong there... Wakana hit the notes right, but I didn't like the quality.. same for Keiko, so I said she's not any better... or if the "better" word somewhat makes so much confusion here, let me say this, "she's of no difference to other two.. they all gave an unsatisfying perf"... All I'm saying here, is there's no need to give someone a headstart, since all of them sucked big time here...
And one more thing, Whatever live, dvd live or actual live, I don't care... all I'm saying is that live was awesome... period. :P
One thing that I've noticed, though. It seems to me that everytime Hikaru sings Magia, she seems tired, even if she didn't sing anything before. Is it just me? Decided to move my question from my edited post since most probably nobody would have noticed it there lol
Maybe she tries really hard to push out her notes, so she gets tired halfway?
Pitch wise, props to Keiko for singing her notes in tune, while Hikaru was a bit flat and Wakana was really flat. But if we're talking about live vocal texture, I would say Hikaru > Wakana > Keiko. And vocal texture is just as important as pitch IMO... it won't do if you can sing on pitch but sound bad....
^ Forgive my ignorance, but what exactly is "vocal texture"? Is that just how they sound when singing?
@KP-X Then I'm not entirely sure why she'd seem tired, short of just not wanting to sing it, and I don't think that's very likely either. I haven't noticed any tiredness myself, but I don't tend to notice those things unless they're falling over their faces or dozing off halfway through a performance, so...
I don't know, it seems to me that she sings it in a tired way from the very start. How can I put it? Her voice doesn't flow well, she cuts off every phrase in an odd way. It's like she can't "switch" properly from one phrase to the next one, and ends up cutting the last word in an...odd way. Well, I think I'm hallucinating and my explanation isn't helping either
@Pontianak: Yeah. Although I prefer Hikaru's voice in this live, I didn't like any of their voices really... they sounded like they were singing with their noses pinched. Maybe because of crappy sound or mics.
^ Thank you for telling me. I'm getting a little intimidated by this link, now, as if I'm going to listen to it and my ears will suddenly crumble and fall off by the apparent bad quality;;
@KP-X I'll keep an ear out next time I listen. I'm only really attentive to things like that if I don't like something.
Oh yah, Hikaru does sing Magia in a seemingly tired voice... once or twice is could be forgiven but for the third time!? That's too much... she should really learn to perfect that song because that song is awesome...!
I guess too much tension makes so much deviations... Maybe she lost her breath because of nervousness before she even started singing it... That should not be... really shouldn't be....
Darn, I love Magia... but the lives are so unsatisfying...
Okay, I just listened to the songs now, and I wrote down my impressions. Sorry for musician stuff, I know that's relatively unimportant...
Magia:
Opening is fine. Keyboard's too loud. Hikaru sounds pretty good. Wakana seems to have a little trouble hitting the high note. Drums are terrible. Can't hear Keiko but she seems to be a little off, either her or Hikaru. Wakana's eeeh sounds fine again. Yeah, like I thought, Keiko's off...she seems to have trouble with her harmony in unedited stuff. Hikaru still sounds fine to me. Drums are still terrible...this can't be Kyo-sama or Masuke. Wakana's a little off on her harmony now, or is it Keiko again?? Hikaru still sounds fine...but she's having trouble with her long note. No violin solo?? Guitar isn't Kore-chan, sounds bland and too copied. Nope, that's not him. Keiko sounds okay but too strong, like she's trying too hard to keep in tune. Harmony is fine. Drums still terrible, too much improv. Hikaru's okay, Wakana's okay on the eeeh. Seems like Hikaru's having a better time with her long note this time. All in all not bad. Not as bad as Epithalamion.
Oblivious:
Violin definitely isn't Konno-san, very flat. Keyboard's too loud again, but I think it's the player. Hikaru sounds okay but a little off, Keiko sounds layered, but Wakana's okay. Is she doubling with Hikaru on the high ahhs? Apparently not, because Hikaru's doing Kajiurago with Keiko at the same time. What's with the extra voices, then? Is there a choir in here?? Okay, Wakana sounds pretty good, albeit a little strained. Now they're getting drowned out, and someone's off again. I'm assuming Keiko, but it's tough to tell. Keyboard is too LOUD. Wakana seems to go off just at the end of her notes. Hikaru seems to have an easier time staying on key now that there's more accompaniment. Funny, Keiko has a better time on the call-and-response than Wakana...maybe Wakana is better with long notes?? I don't get the layered chorus thing. Almost sounds like Nishikawa's original guitar over there in the corner. This chorus sounds okay, Wakana seems to be getting a little better. Ugh, the ending...well, still not bad.
Basically...well, no offense, but I don't understand what all the fuss is about
I agree that they didn't sound outstanding, but they're singing in front of a live band, which is deafening even without extra amplification for the drums. I'd say that part of their problem was not being able to actually hear themselves...which is why they need monitors. But that's another story. Also, I got the distinct impression that (as she admitted) Hikaru struggles with holding long notes; and Wakana struggles with ending short ones properly because of her vibrato.
At any rate, I think that this is about on-average for their usual unedited performance. Epithalamion was very bad in my opinion, and this is much better, although I think that Oblivious was worse than Magia.
I'm not at all discouraged by this, and I don't think they sounded awful. There were some contestants on past seasons of American Idol that were just as bad if not worse, and those people went very far and had all the judges (even Simon) raving about them. Plus, I'd say that there are a lot of other J-Pop artists who have no live singing ability whatsoever, so despite the fact that Kala has a hard time in many places, I have to admire the way they do their best and still perform decently. But I was expecting really terrible performances based on everyone's comments, and I was actually pleasantly surprised when I listened.

I read the whole topic before listening to the lives. I was scared. I was expecting awfulness. And when I actually did listen to the mp3s, they were actually pretty good. I believe most people around here have overly high expectations of the girls. I love listening to their lives, because it shows me that "hey, they can sing well, but they're not robots, so they slip every now and then". I generally don't mind as long as it's not Katy Perry bad.
On an unrelated note, if there were any other artists that performed on that event, it would be good reference to listen to their performances as well in order to be able to better judge whether the girls were subpar or not.
^
I think you guys have low expectations of the girls. Ok, they are human, so they slip here and there. I, at least, don't believe in a perfect live, so I don't long for one as well. But I believe they can do better, and that's not what they are presenting when there are no studio magics. After all, it's not like they sang for 2 hours and Magia and oblivious were the last songs of the setlist. It's not like they sang without earpieces. It's not like they sang the most difficult songs of their whole portfolio. And yet, they committed some mistakes that seem to go beyond little inconsistencies. Staying out of tune most of the time, being flat...that's a bit too much for a show in which they sang only two songs.
I really want to clarify this: I don't want a perfect show. I don't BELIEVE in a perfect show. Errors occur here and there, but they won't bother me as long as the whole is good. That didn't happen here. I'm not going to die and go: OH MY GOD, I'M GOING TO FIRE A PISTOL AT THEM! or anything like this. But for me, this was bad, not because of my expectations, but because of them and them alone. I'm not expecting them to be a Kuroneko(from Onmyouza)-like in their shows but they can do better than stay out of tune most of the time. Anyway, anti grunty-day was just too epic so maybe I should praise this show on a side note? lol
