Emiko Suzuki

Yeah, she nailed that. I liked hearing her singing again, and especially her confident stability in her chest voice and its strength, even though she was using breathy singing to lighten the weight. We know she can belt with more power!

An important part of being a soul-inspired singer are the vocal choices. She was doing vocal glides and mini-swells and moving around with the vocals, though didn't go 100%. Definitely not a pop singer 🌹 (doesn't mean she can't imitate pop stylings if needed, but it's not her foundation)!

I am really curious about her singing with Joelle and Keiko, who have both had exposure with soul-related singing, including jazz for years - Joelle more than Kaori in my opinion, since Kaori was really young and sang as part of an ensemble without really understanding what she was singing at the time.

Emiko's first lead is what I'm waiting to see. I wonder if the new song from Kajiura would be an Emiko lead. Can Kajiura utilize the full power of Emiko's voice and experience? Well, only as far as it fits within Kajiura World.

I still think the place to see Emiko's entire singing ability in a solo context would be on the theatre stage.

I remember during the interview that was shared of YK recently that she mentioned how she struggle finding people that can sustain notes with the fact she likes making the new people sound cool and taking into account the vast range of things Emiko does successfully already, there’s room for a lot of fun if she just doesn’t think of making her Keiko substitute and have fun with the possibilities.

In a way we are reliving a Mari Endo joining SH kind of situation where someone with tons of musical stage experience just rolls in and fits super well

I agree that Kajiura needs to think more expansively of Emiko's role to be able to create different types of vocal arrangements. She's much more than a Keiko stand-in for low notes.

I like your Mari Endo comparison as well. So true!

Lighthouse got me a bit worried in that sense because we didn’t hear much of Emiko, but it is a Lino song plus maybe at the time of recording the whole situation with Keiko was recent so she didn’t have a lot of time to do much more. I am so intrigued for the 60tj anniversary shows and new songs

Do you really mean keiko? Did emiko sing with her?

I believe @Lúa was saying that Emiko may have not been able to record a notable part in "Lighthouse" because there wasn't much time to onboard her as Keiko's exit was still very recent.

We can also add that Emiko is a very busy performer herself, and so her schedule would also have impacted her availability for recording for Kajiura.

Back to this point, I'm thinking that Mari Endo got to shine more (and be more memorable as an individual) because of the way Revo's music is structured as part of a multifaceted live experience requiring not just singing, but narration, acting, and dancing skills from each of the singers. They don't just stand in place and do vocal work. This gives them more opportunity to be highlighted and show personality in little doses (ensemble sections) and large doses (solo leads).

Kaori and Joelle are the only ones who have done that kind of work (ironically with Revo too) but those additional skills have no place to be displayed on Kajiura's stage. She just requires their vocal ability.

That means, the only way they get to show more of their personality is when they take advantage of solo sections in ensemble songs, doing songs written specifically for them (more so than covers, because of all the comparison drama), and also a bit during the MC sections when they are asked questions.

In a group like Kalafina, the lower and fixed number of singers (3), constant roster (no changes for any of the songs so they're all always on stage), and notable personality, energy, and voice differences in the ladies, allowed them to be more visible as characters / avatars than in FictionJunction, and so they reach coalesced a stronger individual fan base per person within the group. They could also do more dramatic stuff on stage for several songs like choreo and dancing, and generally moving around a lot of the time.

FictionJunction is just about the music and highlights Kajiura as much as posible in the video directing (so she's not just captured like an accompanist).

In YKL2 there was a bit more "wildness" uninhibited expression and individual quirks on display in the ladies (especially Kaori), even as they sang Kajiura's structured songs.
