To speak on my experiences.
I have zero experience with EMS shipping from Japan to me/EU. No comment. I don't remember AmazonJP ever giving me the option to choose (it always ended up being DHL) and on CDJ I went with what I already was familiar with.
Ever since AmazonJP and CDJ introduced advance payment for customs/import fees at checkout, I have been using that. Look at the tables above for your %. It sucks but it is what it is. I've not paid anything extra on delivery since then.
Before those advance payments got introduced, I had always gotten slapped with customs/import fees on delivery with DHL, regardless of the total amount of my shipment. Gift or not. It'd been a while at this point for me to be sure, but I think even then those fees had roughly matched my country's vat%.
With that said, I don't think I have ever paid 60EUR in customs/import fees on delivery (back then, or now in advance) but I'm not going to pretend like my orders reach 240EUR total with shipping (which is what _I imagine_ they would need to be for me to get hit with an extra 60EUR).
If you end up using EMS, do tell us how that whole experience goes for you and at what total price (with shipping).
