Vocal Discussion of Yuki's Singers

I know what you mean...Just because a vocalist can sing a very high or low note, doesn't mean s/he (or the audiences) is comfortable with it.

I think Kaori has a higher range where she can sing comfortably than the other two (Yuuka/Hikaru). She sounded really good in some higher-pitched songs [Dream scape & Godsibb(chrous) in FJ vol. 2, a fruitless love-RHH2] where in other similar-ranged songs, Hikaru's voice tends to be strained and (sometimes failed ==) [Hikari no Senritsu]
On the other hand, Hikaru seems to be really comfortable with Magia (rather low ranged song for Yuki) See this [Magia@AFA Singapore]: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAcyg_66RTc&feature=related
Kaori doing lower range will become kinda forceful and sounds suppressed. [Synchronicity (as some pointed out), some Sound Horizon works]

Yuuka seems to be similar to Hikaru. Not sure about her lower range tho so can't comment too much.

Btw, I'm surprised only few people mentioned about Yuriko. She (I believe) has the widest vocal range among FJ/Kalafina girls, not only capable of extreme high notes (famously), but also lower registers. See this one:

Some parts she's even lower than Keiko's usual vocal range. Though here she's really suppressing her voice to reach very low registers, not doing so well (still impressed). She is after all a high range singer.

:XD:
that's a lot of info

anyone attended the concerts of sound horizon where kaori performed as the prince? and she also sang some remi's parts...

I agree Yuriko has the widest vocal range, and Wakana or Yuuka are a toss up for the smallest IMO.

But that may be because Yuuka usually performs the main vocal since she's a soloist, and Wakana also tends to lead because she's a soprano. I've heard her have issues with lower notes in Magia though which lead me to believe that she's better suited just for the high notes...

This is a really informative topic! :goodjob:

By the way, didn't Kajiura-sensei say in an interview that her range is 7 octaves? I seem to remember reading that somewhere... :confu:

The version I've heard is 4 octaves..(still amazing since many of her vocalists don't have that)

7 octaves would be really crazy since Guiness world record holder has 8 octaves (G2 - G10, Georgia Brown).

Gotta ask Fion about that LOL

^ I heard about 4-octaves as well, except she said her voice doesn't sound good :XD:

Yeah, Kaori has been very.. flexible in Sound Horizon works. Among SH singers, I find her vocal range the widest (alongside with Kanami Ayano). She has sung as the Prince (male role) and also done soprano parts.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmJ1l0B-ioc In another performance of this song she has done the soprano part (including the last part). We don't have a video or a sample of it, but Revo wouldn't simple put her to sing it if she couldn't do it properly.

About Yuriko, I'm impressed with her low range, I've never heard this song.. She is a great singer for sure, so talented!

I don't like Hikaru high notes so much, I prefer her in songs like Magia, destinations unknown and progressive. About Yuuka, I dunno, don't listen to her very much..

I really are looking forward to this topic, I have always wanted to know this kind of things because I understand nothing of vocal range.

I think in the video, soprano part is done by Remi (as usual), and Kaori did the main vocal. Though her lines are rather high-pitched, and she handled marvellously.

Yeah, normally it's that. But in the Revival Tour Kaori has done Remi's parts in a lot of songs, so I think she can do soprano parts.. Or something like that. She even talked about this in her interview: "After that, I had a lot of subdued soprano parts, huh? I did my best to copy what Remi-chan had done. Especially in “shwarzweiiß ~Kiri no Mukou ni Tsunagaru Sekai~,” my abs were trembling!". I have never heard her soprano parts, but just to let you all know that (and hope for a DVD)

About Keiko, I think her range is low and.. just. I don't like when she sings higher, she sounds... strange, I don't know. But still love her voice so much <3 Again, I know nothing about range, but although she can hit some high notes, her low voice will always be better~

Thanks for the info, I didn't know that and never seen that performance. In that case, my adoration to Kaori is sky-rocketing as she can pretty much take up all parts in a vocal band XDDD
Tho I can't imagine Kaori being soprano (operatic, like Remi) as her voice is (most of the time) very lyrical and I don't know if she has the 'power' on extreme high registers.

IMO...I think I can't say anything about Yuriko's vocal range...she's so superb..!!!! Can't tell that which note is too high or too low for her...lol. Other ones may be the same....

^and at some live, jimang also did remi's parts LOLz

somehow, keiko's voice in kaze no machi he's not lower than most of her songs today

Yuriko is amazing, since she can sing higher and lower notes than the other girls. :]

What's the highest note Yuriko can reach? :ayashii:
(and for that matter, the other girls too?)

S-SEVEN OCTAVES?? :fwa: I think maybe she has four...if she had a seven octave voice range, I don't think Yuki needs to hire other vocalists anymore, she can just sing everything herself :XD: (4 octave range is still crazy though...but there's kajiura-sensei for you :goodjob:)

well, some people are not confident with how their voice sounds regardless of whether they are good singers or not...

I think that for a composer and musician like Yuki she probably envisions a different type of atmosphere for each of her songs, so having various vocalists helps her achieve this vision, because for example, you wouldn't imagine Keiko singing a Yuuka song and viceversa, and IMO all of the Utahimes have something unique and distinctive about them which makes them important to complete Yuki's work.

Or maybe I'm just overthinking everything :ohoho:

^ I agree, I think Yuki just sings whenever she feels comfortable doing so.

I still think that having such a voice range and not singing is a waste of talent :uh..:

It may be, but I think she's happier composing songs rather than singing them. :ayashii:
