tiny desk concerts JAPAN

It was a pretty great show. And by the way, a very funny concept, close to MTV unplugged but with less space for the instruments. I guess it's not easy to find the perfect way for the sound to resonate in a place not create to have the good resonance...

It was great to hear Yuuka back with FJ and, yes, Emiko is a very very good choice for the band. I really like her voice and even if her "Alleluia" is different than the one with Keiko, she can make this song a little like hers...

Lino Leia was so good in fanfare. So soft and I think she has really improved over time.
Alleluia was really so lovely. such harmony hmmm...
Parade was also heartwarming, I was somehow worried that Kaori wouldn't be able to pull it off but it was all good.

Kajiura:

" Then a word came to mind: hogaraka. Instead of a forced brightness, it's about letting go of the unnecessary, until what remains is clear and bright. How wonderful it would be to keep making music that way. From that open, honest place, I wrote a song looking back on how I got here. So much of who I am is in the music I've made with these people. My desire to have fun and make music together came pouring out, and a song emerged (Parade)"

aww.

Watching this made me really miss Yuuka. Somehow her voice hasn't diminished at all over time (granted, Yuuka pretty much never strains and all of her songs are firmly in her comfortable range) and her head voice got even better. She was always one of the few singers who had very little difference between her studio/official live releases and her live singing and I'm happy to hear more from her again. No matter how many FJY covers FJ or her collab artists do, I find I still love the originals with Yuuka better.

Homura is par for the course. I still don't like Lisa's voice because it lacks depth and she doesn't really emote or add any interesting dynamics to her singing so other than her energetic pop songs or her one ballad where she does well (Ichiban no Takaramono), I find her songs very ho hum.

Fanfare was good, and I concur that Lino Leia has improved a lot since her debut with FJ. Certainly much better than the last time I saw her live in person.

Alleluia was good. Finally something where Yuriko isn't just on high harmony duty, she actually sang lead with Joelle while Kaori and Lino Leia took the lower harmony.

Parade is also good (well, Joelle is good) but pretty much the same every time I hear it live. I still find the song very boring and plain. I'll have to disagree with the Kaori doing well here, she was very flat pretty much the whole time save for her final solo. I'll need to accept that she doesn't have the same "sweet" quality her voice used to have pre-2020.

Alleluiah is such a treat ❤️
Their unplugged version is way better than the entire Kalafina Anniversary Live 2. Hehehe. Jk.

I really loved Kajiura’s message too.

And as a musician, the chosen chords used by Kajiura in the beginning of Alleluiah is so good. Bittersweet. It is the same as letting go. Those are the chords used to typically invoke a feeling of sadness yet being happy and content.

I love how raw everything sounds. Just shows they truly are Japan’s treasures. I am looking forward to more appearances from the Kajiura family ❤️

I have to admit, going back, Kaori did go flat at times (I had initial worries as I'd mentioned - her voice is definitely strained in the recent years) but it didn't take away from the experience for me. thankfully overall everyone did so well. the setting is a bit awkward too, as Kajiura mentions, it's too many people in such a small area; I could almost detect a tense vibration in the last syllable of tabidatta as Emiko started off in Fanfare xD
shiranai chihei e kimi to from Lino Leia is so sweet.
