tiny desk concerts JAPAN

I love these new videos. One thing I noticed is that they didn’t use a manipulator in this live so basically NO BACKING TRACKS and BACKING INSTRUMENTS here. In the intro of Sokyu no fanfare, we don’t hear the usual sound FX used by Kajiura here. So ALL LIVE with no backing tracks.
Would love to hear this so much. No wonder a string quartet is present, to make the band sound fuller.

Interview with Yoko Kajiura Right After the Performance📹1️⃣

💬"The joy of music that's free from adjustments"
💬"I thought I'd play the songs everyone wants to hear..."

This is just joy all around! Yuki Kajiura shining on another recognized stage, showcasing her qualities by bringing her best energies to bear.

I am really pleased to hear our select ladies sing here, but I feel KOKIA or Kasahara would also have been delightful to hear in this context: a small intimate venue, everyone close together, so many voices. I wonder how they would all fit around each other, and the VOCALS! I am imagining how the harmony would shine and the characteristics of each voice be more distinct, since you can't exactly edit them (studio magic) with the mic bleed due to so many close live mics.

I watched an interview a while back with the creator of the OG NPR Tiny Desk and he talked about the challenge of close-capturing so many voices/elements on one stage, and how he achieves the quality of sound since he has so many mics together.

His comment on one YouTube video that attempted to recreate the sound design briefly describes his philosophy, "The one thing I would critique that is vital to the Tiny Desk and an important part of my philosophy for these concerts is this: no headphones or monitors. The singer sings in the room without any amplification. Since there are also no monitors, everyone has to play at a volume that allows them to hear the singer and also every other instrument. So, in essence, the band is ‘self-mixing.’ That makes the performance unique, as well as the recording techniques."

I wonder if the other locations (including tiny desk JP) use the same engineering principles to have that "sound" or just use their own ideas.

This is the interview with the founder of the NPR Tiny Desk.

It's the philosophy of the originator of the format that it's what's captured from the live performance that is taken through the mics, though equalized after the recording to have some separation to the voices and instruments. No editing of the actual vocal content though.

They also don't use monitors (in-ears or wedges) so it's what you hear you work with. Drums especially have to play softer than normal.

💬「いやもう近くて」
💬「お部屋にLiSAさんを招いた感じ」

💬 “No, it's just so close.”
💬 “It feels like I've invited LiSA into my room.”

There are some high-quality photos of the ladies on the NHK website. I could save them but can't upload them here.

Singing at the NHK office, LiSA commented, “We’ve sung this song together many times before, but today was the most nerve-wracking...” expressing her unease in the unfamiliar setting. Kajiura also looked slightly embarrassed as she said, “This is the first time I’ve played so close to a singer. I could even hear her subtle breaths,” and smiled as she reflected on the performance, adding, “Although our seating arrangement prevented us from looking at each other, I was able to play while watching LiSA’s reflection in the piano.”

That is what is called a bevy of beauties! 💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗

They all looked lovely and happy in the videos, and it was really nice seeing their individual styles as well.

I liked Kajiura's floral-patterned attire, and also loved the pairing of Kaori and Joelle with their similar gowns and accessorizing (classy). Everyone else looked good in their cute casual/trendy wear. I have to say, I felt a little nudge about Keiko not being able to be part of this, but it is what it is.

This Tiny Desk format is actually a great showcase for everyone's live vocals, especially those with leads. It helps to grasp how the singers actually sound together without the sound/audio design of Kajiura's lives.

LiSA had the opportunity to re-do one of her FIRST TAKE songs, and I think it was a strategic opportunity to give her (as a popular solo artist) additional visibility (she could be on this stage all by herself at her level) and also be a pushback to some content that challenged the FIRST TAKE concept, implying that it is edited (Fil from Wings of Pegasus had her face on one the thumbnail of one of his debunking videos).

I am waiting for some YouTube reaction channels that usually track anisong artists to also react to, and discuss, the performances.
