Japan Expo report day 4 (Saturday):
This was the day of the first (supposedly) big Kalafina event, and the day for which I got the signing ticket at the Wakanim booth, so I took my Consolation Live Tour book (the olive one) with me. First thing I noticed after entering the halls: The festival was packed today, probably due to the weekend. If you think there were a lot of visitors during the last three days, add another 50% or so. Sometimes it was so bad that there was no getting through, especially at the choke point between the two festival halls. I tried different places to sit down for a while - it always took about a minute until someone asked me to leave because the seats were reserved for the restaurant, the stairs must not be blocked and so on. I finally settled in the resting area in hall 6 and waited until about 11:30 to go to the signing session at Wakanim.
The queue was constantly filling up while I was standing there, but unlike yesterday (according to Seasonreaper's report), I didn't see anyone wearing a Kalafina shirt except me - at least not from where I was standing in the queue. The handling seemed to be a bit different today, the items to be signed (one per person) were handed to Kalafina by a staff member. I had planned to have three different pages signed - the ones with the large individual photos, but changed my mind when I realized that there was no way I could explain that to the person handling the items - so I settled for the group photo instead. Fun fact: During the signing, all three of them (individually) made a remark about my "After Eden" tour shirt. I'm really glad that all went smoothly today, and the golden ink actually matches the color of the tile on the Consolation book.
Directly after the signing, I met with Seasonreaper. I didn't want to stay until the signing was over, since the Wakanim booth is close to one of the entrances, and the lane was getting ever more crowded and louder. We visited the Saiko! Stage for the Yoshiaki Manabe performance and afterwards headed to the Live House for the Wakkagi Band concert. We ended up somewhere in the middle of the queue for this, although we arrived more than 30 minutes before the concert started. The entry was organized differently now: There were two separate entry points, one for normal and one for press/premium ticket holders, and the people with normal tickets could only enter after the others were inside. If the setup is the same for the Kalafina concert tomorrow, I will go for the premium ticket line - I actually have a premium ticket but have not used any of its benefits so far. Another difference: The fence inside the hall separating the sections was removed. And no photos and video recordings were allowed at this concert. The sound quality was mostly fine today, as far as I could tell.
Since the Wakkagi concert ran a bit late, we hurried to the Japan Expo stage next for the big "Japan in Motion" event. Coming late, all of the seats in the front rows were already taken (or reserved), but we found seats somewhere in the middle - still a decent viewing position, though. I tried to take notes, but not understanding anything (neither the Japanese nor the French translation) made it really difficult for me to follow what was happening on the stage. If anyone speaking French was there, feel free to correct my report.
The event started at 15:10 with the introduction of the hosts - two peoplo from Nolife and Natsuko Aso - and two mascots (apparently, Japanese people love mascots): Yuki(?) and Coooby the Run. This was follewed by two sketches by Jaru Jaru (who were at the Saiko! Stage yesterday with Kalafina) and then three more guests: the mascots Toripi and Funassyi and the musician Yoshiki. After that, some kind of game show started, whose rules I did not get at all. It involved throwing shoes(!), a short quiz (during which a person from the audience was invited on the stage) and a sumo match between two of the mascots(!).
Eventually, after about 50 minutes, Kalafina was invited on the stage. They introduced themselves in French and talked a bit about the places they visited here in Paris. As a teaser for tomorrow's concert, they sang an a cappella version of about 30 seconds of misterioso. Yes, that was the whole music part for Kalafina on the event. Next up was moumoon, who could at least sing part of a song (2 minutes of "Sunshine Girl") accompanied by a guitar.
Another game followed in which the guests had to guess items that people connected most often with France (like the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Louvre, Napoleon or Wine). They did some Jankenpon in between to decide who would go first (Kalafina won, of course). Finally, the hosts from Nolife had prepared a number of prizes that members of the audience could win - the first prize being a trip to Japan. Each guest (including Kalafina) threw a coloured ball into the audience and whoever caught it got the prize. The winner of the first prize was invited onto the stage for a moment, and then the event ended, at around 16:40.
If you expected (like me) that Kalafina would be performing at least one full song during the event, that was pretty disappointing. All in all, Kalafina was on stage for about 25 minutes and sang for about 30 seconds, without music.
I skipped the following Coooby signing, as I didn't want a second cardboard signed. And it might have looked a little odd, since I already had been at the Wakanim signing event just before. Instead, I went to the Main Stage to see another part of the "Japan Anison & Vocalo Super Performance" I mentioned in one of the earlier reports. When I returned to the Coooby booth afterwards (around 17:30), the signing session was already over.
The last event on my schedule for today was the koto concert by the Morikawa sisters on the Cultural Stage. It started almost 30 minutes late and they had some technical problems in the beginning - but then everything went fine. It's a pity that many parts of the performance were heavily drowned by noise from the nearby stages. This one really had deserved a closed room. I left the festival afterwards and walked to the hotel together with Seasonreaper, and it turned out that our hotels are actually next to each other.
Tomorrow is the day of the concert, remember to queue up early if you want to get a place in front of the stage.
