Hi Hoshikuzu06!

Yes, I want to compose, but first I have to learn everything about the notes, etc...You're composing? ---do you mind if I take a look? maybe I can help you with the lyrics, if you don't mind that is...

hmm.. I also don't know anything about notes.. maybe I'll just use my voice and a recorder to remember the rhythm and its melody.. haha! hmm.. I'm not yet finish because of studies.. :uh..: i'll PM you for the lyrics.. :) please don't give it to anyone.. ;)

Have you received my PM??
Is it fine? a li'll weird right?..
hmm.. I just used my imagination in writing that.. :blood:

Jessica, Before I could help you in composing.
Let me assess you.

Do you have a talent wherein after you listen and remember a tune of the song, You can play it on the piano (or any instrument).

That is a prerequisite if you want to be a proffesional composer.

First of all, You may know music theory, (even advanced music theory) , but it will all be useless if you were able to think of a melody in your head and not know what notes are played or even figure out what notes are being played.

If you still do not understand what I am talking about.

Try to listen to Yuki Kajiura's "The song of storm and fire" and try to figure what notes are being played without looking on the music sheets.
Don't even dare to use a tone-processing program.

If you do not have the ability, It is not the end of the world yet.

You could still have this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ear_training

THe second step is to study (advanced) music theory.

You should also need to study counterpoint.

BTW, I bought these books.
Think twice before buying them.
Don't buy them now.

1.) http://www.amazon.com/Music-Composition ... 0470224215

THis book requires knowledge in music theory.
You need it when you are already advanced.
I don't recommend you to buy it right away because it is very advanced.

2.) http://www.amazon.com/Counterpoint-Comp ... pd_sim_b_3

This book is very very very hard.
I may even regard myself as a very talented musician (even born to be a musician) and say that this book is difficult to put into my head.

See what you can achieve after you have studied it.
but you should start in the basics.

I really really battered myself into studying these type of things and I tell you that It is as hard as studying Physics.

I understand what you're saying and Yes, I do have that ability to hear the tune and figure out the notes on my violin. The problem is, it takes me hours to figure some out, so I'm slow at it...

Kajiura's "The Song of Storm and Fire" I can figure that out. I have the notes in my head already, I think...

And thanks for the book recommendations, I shall look at them, when I'm off from work...

Thanks for your help!

WE'll , You should train yourself to do it within seconds.

If you have a melody in your head.
You may as we'll get distracted and you will lose the melody.
Getting a melody and then going to the violin then playing the wrong note then You forgot the melody.

Composing is like listening to a new song in the first time.
You should have good memeory and control yourself from distraction.

Another thing you should remember is to have a good short-term memory.

You will find yourself composing when let's say You go to a beach.
And It was a very beautiful melody that you wanted it in your composition and when you go home, You will not remember the melody.

That happens to me everytime.

GOOD LUCK then.

Since you're going to college/university, you should major in music composition. That will pretty much take care of any academic/history/harmony/analysis/counterpoint/classical/jazz/rock/serialism questions you may have.

And then, realize that depending on what you want to compose, you may need very little of what you've learned, or none at all.

Listen to lots of music, and use analysis to figure out what elements of a work you like or dislike.

Having a good ear is nice; having an audio recorder handy is better. You don't have to figure out what you're hearing on the spot.

Also, read Christopher Tin's thoughts on composition: http://www.christophertin.com/blog/labels/Composition Principals.html
