I think I was expecting Iwanami again. Nice that it's not.
This guy seems to like bolder choices. He did My-HiME/Otome too.

Okay... so I was looking around for Sound Directors on Kajiura's shows to make a spreadsheet for myself and...

I was today years old that I realized that Koichi Mashimo is not actually credited as Sound Director on any of his shows with Yuki Kajiura except NOIR, .hack//Liminality and the first 11 episodes of .hack//SIGN...

Or maybe I did know and my brain repressed the information... o_0

Starting with episode#12 of .hack//SIGN the Sound Director is credited to Toru Nakano (who is also a Sound Producer on all of their shows since NOIR) and after SIGN he continues serving both roles of Sound Director and Sound Producer on all of Mashimo x Kajiura shows.

Interestingly enough a similar thing happens on Shin Kyuuseishu Densetsu - Hokuto no Ken. Toru Nakano jumped in from being one of the Sound Producers on earlier movies to Sound Director on the final one (replacing Satoru Koyama from all previous ones).

Seems like I might have Toru Nakano a lot to thank for. Not just Yuki Kajiura anime.

Jin Aketagawa, the Sound Director from Lord El Melloi II, was one of the music directors on Kajiura's Meguri Aishite game. Wow. Everything's connected.

Sound directors put together a menu/order of the types of tracks they want to play in the show. Something like action track, atmospheric track, silly track, etc. Every sound director does this differently. I remember Kajiura said Mashimo had very eccentric requests on his menu, and Yoko Kanno said Wakabayashi ( the Vanitas sound director) had menus that read like poems.

I’m guessing the producer is the person who assembles the musicians and production staff but I really haven’t looked into that role.

I don't know shit but I imagine a Producer's job is to make sure everything that's under their umbrella GETS DONE and to the satisfaction (whatever that might be) of people higher in the command chain/production committee.

It would involve finding the right people to work under them (presumably, if they weren't already chosen by some higherups), making difficult decisions (sometimes butting in artistically for better or worse), while trying to stay on schedule and within the allocated budget - maybe sometimes trying to get more money or time believing it's necessary (but then there'd be even more to answer for to sponsors). Not sure if they would be the ones looking for money for production from the start but maybe...? v( ' ')v

The director role seems quite creatively inclined. So they set up the flow of the show through the pieces of music they select and the order in which they use them.
