Kalafina make Fan"girls" buy their merchandise because of those stunning dresses/attires and dark lolita look. Nobody would be interested if they wore FJ T-shirts, even if Sony made them into Towels/Bowls.
What I am trying to say is they are already Idol material in the first place Sony is just being smart and took advantage of it. I believe we have quite a number of fangirls here that are into Dresses/Attires that will buy them because of those cute dresses but for some guys they just wouldn't care or appreciate em

I don't know much about dancing but they are surely subpar singers for our standards. However, I'm quite surprised that they are in the very high rank among Korean girl idols for singing aspect (only for idols..not for all singers) My guess is that the singing standard for idols may be quite low...and if some people said they like them coz their singing, I think it isn't because 'SNSD is extremely good at singing' but I think that it's just because 'SNSD singing is better than the average among girlgroup idols'.
Back to topic..... I don't care much about the idol-like merchandise. Finally, it's the artists ability that tell everything. It's fine for me if a very good singer is treated like an idol as long as he/she is still good at singing, not just use the good appearance to attract the fans... .

Most K-pop groups always have 1 lead vocal + 1 rapper and the rest for dancing effects and choreographic effects
Very few K-Pop groups have all members that are able to sing decently, not mentioning harmonizing like Kalafina

a bit OOT but you should check this girl on my siggy (Masuda Yuka of AKB48). She CAN sing as well as harmonize.

On the same note as Yuki (sorry for off-topic), Akimoto Sayaka has a beautiful, almost Keiko-like voice for an idol. There are some unedited videos of her on Youtube, and she can definitely sing well on her own.
In any case, Kala and FJ's vocalists are still the best for me~

I think that the harmonization is considered to be unnecessary skill for idol singing...even there are many members, but they tend to distribute the lyrics in to many parts and just sing separately.... It may be the reason why we rarely find good harmonized-singer among idols. (Absolutely off-topic.....sorry everyone....

Checking the setlist for the DVD/BD again...and I'm kinda sad that the ballads (especially from Seventh Heaven 
) weren't on this one, even though they were all performed at some point during the tour...my dream would have been all the new songs + Ashita no Keshiki, lirica, Utsukishisa, Seventh Heaven, Kimi ga Hikari and maybe serenato (see if Hikaru does better on yuriko's parts)...I feel like these are almost like the forgotten songs of Kalafina (especially lirica, Ashita no Keshiki and Utsukushisa...)
But all the same, I'm so excited for this~~!

My friend said about this Sayaka too some days ago, and I finally able to hear her voice because my friend give me some of her performance video. Her voice is indeed deep, and her voice is quite nice, although I still far more prefer Keiko's voice.. Her voice is a bit too rough for me. But still, when I googled up on her, what I found were a rather disturbing article so I just lose interest on her just in 1 second...
And I always love that Masuda Yuka on Yuki88 siggie...although I love the one who already graduated (?) Her name is Mayu or what...on side notes, I just watched those SNSD perform singing some songs and actually I find them can sing, although their main charm is their dancing. And when they dance and sing at the same time it indeed so bad on live, but when they concentrating on singing only, I love some of their voice, especially Taeyeon.. But I still agree with ninetales, Kalafina and FJ vocalists are still the best for me :D
Just contemplating on this and I finally decide to buy this DVD if there's still copy left next month, because actually I don't really love the setlist and I already broke from TTB and some novels..
Athough I was kinda sure that tomorrow there will be lots of the videos from this live on youtube already...
