Gekijōban Mahō Shōjo Madoka Magica: Walpurgis no Kaiten (New trailer out - In JP theaters on August 28 2026)

We'll find out soon enough. ^_^
How exciting. When all YK movies were getting announced, I was not expecting Madoka from SHAFT to be the first new project to actually materialize.

As someone who loves this show dearly . . . I really think it needs to end. Personally, I’d have been fine if it did at Rebellion, but I do believe the story’s run its course. The main thing keeping it interesting to me is that it’s still an (albeit old) Urobuchi script, but since he’s still busy with his puppet show last I heard, I doubt we’ll get any more writing from him. Unless he somehow wrote two scripts back in 2014, which seems unlikely.

All this is to say that if there’s more, I’ll still watch it. I survived Magireco so I might as well go down with the franchise ship. And if Kajiura’s still got that specific Madoka spark that got me into her work to begin with, then all the better.

I'm not sure how I'd feel. I'm not the biggest Madoka TV fan (particularly the entire dank middle section with Sayaka) - I thought Rebellion was way more fun... I guess it all depends how Rising actually is for me. I did not like the dental checks in trailers one bit, or Bebe spinning on a pole...

But part of me feels it's weid to get a single new movie after 13 years...

^ if its going to drag for a decade like Pripri movies then no thanks. At this rate Kajiura will retire or even worse ⚰️ before even the story ends.
Would that be an issue for you IF they did release soundtracks though? (Unlike on PriPri...)

Hear hear.

Before I saw Rebellion, I thought "what's the point? The conclusion of the series was great". After I saw it, I thought "OK, very good job to do a conclusion so good after the good conclusion of the series". So, I have faith for this movie but I also think it needs to end.

From my very recent perspective, I would say Rebellion was darker than the original TV series.

It was a worthy continuation to the OG I think (just saw it over the weekend). It took me some time to get into the flow of it initially, but it was quite a unique story and thought-provoking. Hearing all the Kalafina songs that I didn't know where part of this was a pleasant surprise.

The movie introduced quite a few new things that I hope are further evolved in the upcoming one(s):
- Homura expanded the expression of a witch's reality-warping Labyrinth abilities (take over a city and run it like a real space, erase/rewrite memories).
- Looking at their sizes I wonder about the Walpurgisnacht witch from the original series, Homura and hypothetical Madoka with forms in terms of power comparison. They first two were city size while Madoka was entering the stratosphere.
- The return of Sayaka with her witch powers but under control and Bebe too being returned to her human form later and working with Mami.
- Mami and Homura's gunfight scene (to Absolute Configuration) was one of the more invigorating fight scenes I've seen recently. The fact they are both gunslingers took it to a whole new level. I think Mami's my favorite conceptually in terms of general style (costumer, her hair power) and fighting technique.
- So Homura's selfish desire to control Madoka out of "love" caused her to be willing to become anything to achieve that... Twisted.

I don't really know if I found Rebellion darker than the series...

Yes, Homura is such a darker character in the movie than in the show where she is mostly a tsundere with an obsession, obsession so much bigger in the movie. But the fate of others characters is "softer" in this new world

Mami/Homura's gunfight
: Still today one of the best fight in a anime with some others in Demon Slayer (Mugen train arc / Entertainement district arc) and Fate (especially in the third movie of Heaven's feel, spring song). Absolute configuration such a great music for this scene (even if, like I previously wrote, it could also be a good music for Nier: Automata :) )

Plus a video message I can't embed in this message, but it did mention the physical release of Kanata on 2nd September 2026.

Kajiura's looking good and youthful too. I think I like thus hairdo/makeup combo on her.

That said, I'm going to listen to "Kanata" a bit more carefully. I may warm up to it a bit more over time.
