There are a lot of festivities that happen during Chinese New Year! Generally families get together for a big dinner on new year's eve to celebrate the coming of a new year. There are also many traditions and customs that Chinese people follow. For example there is the Lion Dance and the Dragon Dance. Married people give red pockets containing money to younger people, symbolizing luck. Firecrackers are lit for celebration. According to a traditional folklore, this is done to scare away "Nian" (literally means "year"), a mythical beast that is afraid of red. That is also why red symbolizes good luck and is worn during Chinese New Year. However I think firecrackers are banned in many places. The festive atmosphere is much greater in China and other places in Asia. I wish I were there to celebrate~~~
