Summer 2013 Anime Chart

Not every season can be Spring I guess. Still kinda disappointing.

Will pick up Silver Spoon. It's an adaptation of a manga by the author of Full Metal Alchemist, which is all-around pretty good. It's being done by A-1 (not sure why the chart doesn't mention this), who I find rather... mediocre. They did Sword Art Online, which was good and then dropped off a cliff in S2 (S2's source material was worse to begin with, but responsible adaptation could have lessened that) and Fractale, which was pretty but mediocre. And they did the Valkyria Chronicles anime, which was garbage. I haven't seen any of their slice-of-life works, maybe A-1 is just bad at action shows. Don't really have high hopes though.

At least I'll have Attack on Titan continuing through summer, then Valvrave resuming in Fall, plus whatever's good in Fall (which tends to be on the same level as Spring).

@Fetucine: The next volumes of SAO (GGO) are more interesting than the ALO ark, so if they decide to continue (which is likely considering the popularity of the novels) its gonna be good, but they need to change director first, the one that handled S1,2 was really bad (cut many fight short, focused too much on romance parts, skipped important parts of the story, misused Yuki's music)

It'll be difficult to top spring, considering that had Attack on Titan, Gargantia, Chihayafuru, ect. But if the pickings are slim this season, I'll just use the time to watch old shows I missed.

Looking forward to:
- Hakkenden second season: I liked the first season once I got past the weak first episode, so I'll definitely take a look at this.
- Silver Spoon: It's from the author of Fullmetal Alchemist--that's reason enough.

Might check out:
- Inu to Hasami wa Tsukaiyou: Takahiro Sakurai sounded hilarious in the trailer; Marina Inoue sounded appropriately menacing--might be worth it for some lulz.
- Brothers Conflict: ...if only to figure out how the heck they're gonna squeeze that many characters into a single show.
- The Fate spinoff: Fate + magical girls = me giving it a shot
- Makai Ouji: Devils and Realist: Nice character designs, and I like the premise.
- Free: KyoAni usually does moe shows (and I do like the ones I've seen), so it'll be interesting to see what they do with this. I'm a bit wary of the sports thing though. (I like Chihayafuru, but that consisted of slapping cards...)
- Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi: The premise sounds really, really fascinating. I know absolutely nothing beyond the blurb, but that alone has me hooked.

And hey, even if they all suck, I'll still have Attack on Titan to keep me company. :ohoho:

Re:

i'm a sucker for nostalgic pointless anime and magical girls, so i'll probably watch:

tamayura 2
senki zesshou symphogear G
gen'ei o kakeru taiyou
teekyuu season 2
dangan ronpa (because i haven't played the game; i need to do that)
fate/kaleid because it looks hilarious
and definitely the adaptation of Hyperdimension Neptunia. :omg: i still can't believe that it's happening.

... the swimming male fanservice anime also seems hilarious, but i don't think i'll watch it, lol :ohoho:

oh my gosh, i still have to start that. everybody keeps telling me to, but i just don't have the time... (yet)

Finally Rozen Maiden :sohappy: +Silver Spoon will be in my definite watch list

Slim pickings... Might go back and watch the spring season (which I missed due to health and school issues). Although, I am interested in the Rozen Maiden remake. I loved the first time around, so I'm hoping this will be spectacular. Kamisama looks interesting too. It'll either be dark and awesome, or flop hard on its face like Another did (granted, the storyline had to be majorly censored...). You know what, Sailor Moon too. A blast from the past there. Probably will also check out the Fate spin-off. I suppose that it would be too much to hope this is a hint they're doing Heaven's Feel... THE RIGHT WAY.

Definitely going to see the new KnK though when someone puts it up to stream...

First impressions on the shows:

Kami-sama no Inai Nichiyōbi (The Sunday without God)
- interesting background story, but not yet fully explained (it seems to reference a literature outside religion citing a different explanation of the Creation story, not sure what it is though)
- Show is not definitely for loli desires. xD

Free!
- Quite better than what I expected that it is just a fanservice anime for the girls, thanks to the focus on sport and rivalries (have you heard of competitive swimming without taking off clothes? xD)
- Character habits can be variably disturbing, lol
- At least there is a girl, giving the similar atmosphere as to having Kyosuke in Madoka, for me at least

Servant x Service
- One of those anime that rarely feature a setting that does not involve a school at all.
- Reminds me of those working in the government offices. They get paid by our taxes, after all...

Blood Lad
- Main guy shares VA with Maou of Hataraku Maou-sama. Promising plot.
- Catchy opening, alright ED
- Looking forward to hear Yuuka in her character

Blood Lad and Servant x Service are the shows that I will not definitely drop this season. Not sure about the others though...

So, I went crazy and decided to check out the first episodes of nearly every new show streaming on Crunchyroll.com

Keeping:
Hakkenden: Eight Dogs of the East second season: Retains the nice balance of humour and seriousness, vignette and overarching plot, from the first season. I'm probably one of eight people (sorry, bad pun) who was excited for this, but I'm glad it's back.

Free: Absolutely hilarious. It doesn't really work as a fanservice show for me--too over-the-top and ridiculous--but it is a total success as humour. I couldn't stop laughing when episode 2 got to the fish tank...

Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi/Sunday without God: Probably the most ambitious show. I loved the premise when I read about it and the first episode doesn't disappoint. The random humour moment was a bit off-putting, but I'm hoping the show will find its balance by the next few episodes. And yeah, episode 1 was a lot of questions and few answers, but I'm okay with that as long as it eventually delivers the answers.

Uchouten Kazoku/The Eccentric Family: This surprised me. I wouldn't have watched it if I hadn't decided to check out nearly everything, but found myself enjoying it. It's more serious than I thought it would be, in a good way. It's a very unique show in both plot and visuals.

Inu to Hasami wa Tsukaiyou/Dog & Scissors: What's with Takahiro Sakurai and semi-animal (heck, semi-dog) protagonists this season? Anyway, not complaining 'cause he sounds hilarious and the show is hilarious. Am I an awful person, for thinking the dog is the most adorable thing ever but still laughing at the abuse?

On the fence:
Makai Ouji: It wasn't as bad as it could've been... but considering that I loved Pandora Hearts and Black Butler, it also wasn't as good as it could've been. It doesn't bore me when I watch it but I don't think about it when I stop, either. I'll give it a few more episodes.

Silver Spoon: Perfectly fine little show, just a bit too small-scale and real world for me. I'll check out the next episode but it has equal chances of grabbing me and becoming Chihayafuru, or just being forgotten.

il sole penetra il illusioni: I couldn't watch this without thinking "Madoka clone," but it does do a few things interesting and different. Most of it kinda bored me, but a few moments were genuinely horrifying. I'll give it another episode, and if it still doesn't impress me, I'll hold off unless I hear word of it becoming the RahXephon to Madoka's Evangelion.

Dropping:
Stella Women's Academy, High School Division Class C3: Should've avoided it when I saw "high school" in the title, haha. Checked it out due to some good reviews, instead got an episode of boredom. It's a good show for people who are fans of "cute girls in a club" type series, or someone who is really into airsoft, but for me... meh. I prefer my girls with guns series to be actually dangerous and lethal.

Gifu Doudou: Similar to Eccentric Family, I wouldn't have seen this if I hadn't been determined to see everything. Unlike Eccentric Family, I found almost nothing here to enjoy. It's muscled guys making ridiculous faces interrupted by constant history lessons, so who's the target audience? The ridiculousness interferes with the history, and the historical exposition makes it too boring to work as humour. So... I guess it's leaving my queue.

I'll probably check out the Fate magical girl show and Brothers Conflict once they start streaming. I'm sorta dreading the latter, considering what I've heard...

Most favorite OP of the season:
Kami-Inai OP (Birth - Eri Kitamura)

OP Credits (I like how they use French here)

Short PV

Love Lab is the only new thing I'm watching (though I'm continuing SnK). It's basically the second coming of Hataraku Maou-Sama; vastly better than it has any right to be. The premise isn't anything special, but the execution is spot-on and it's pretty self-aware (the swooning background girls are pretty much always amazing).

I watched the first episode of Silver Spoon, but it just kind of felt a bit... off. The voice casting in particular felt really bad (I've always imagined Mikage having a voice around that of Keiko's normal speaking voice, not the Generic Cute Girl they went with). Overall it just wasn't really a work I thought was improved by the adaptation.

@chrisgarci
Agree, best OP of the season: sound, visuals, plus the French is an extra bonus for me. I didn't realize Eri Kitamura sang it! PV doesn't seem super-exciting, but I like the inclusion of the choir girls in the background, and I support the presence of huge bookshelves. :plot:

For best ED, I'm tempted to go with the crazy extravaganza (Magi costumes? dancing with gas masks?) from Free, especially for now well-timed it was to the music. However, there's something incredibly beautiful about Hakkenden's ED, which definitely wins best song for me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvXQncZbq2E

EDIT: Typo

@Coral : We got the same taste regarding the ED for this season, although I'm not particularly liking Ceui since the Stardust Melodia incident some years ago. But Soai Calendula (kinda forget the title) is really beautiful :XD: And free! ED is really catchy, waiting for the full version here.

Anyway, I'm following Hakkenden, free! (which is obviously hilarious. I really don't see any 'fujoshi fanservice' that much from this anime, since this anime has been depicted as yaoi anime by some people, lol) and Makai Ouji. Gonna download Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi since the summary intrigued me.

^I wasn't familiar with Ceui prior to hearing this ED, so I was purely drawn to how beautiful the song was, especially its opening lines.

^
I was purely drawn to the song too, actually. I just noted that I'm not particularly liking Ceui in general since Stardust Melodia incident some years ago. Still, Soai Calendula is really nice. But it somehow reminds me of another song I can't remember what.

[edit] I remember it now. Kimi wa Boku ni Niteiru.
