My experience from Vanessa Mae's concert in Athens

Hello!! I am so happy! :sohappy: :sohappy: :sohappy: and that's because I had the change to attend at one Vanessa Mae concert (for those who don't know her - which is kinda impossible- see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanessa_Mae) and its was Beyond AWESOME!!!! :nosebleed: :nosebleed: :nosebleed:. It was held at the Herod Atticus Odeon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odeon_of_Herodes_Atticus which is a Roman-times theater which the Emperor Herod Atticus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herodes_Atticus) build as present to his wife Rigillis, which as far as I have heard used to have a roof but was burned at some point so only the rest remained, and since it was restored at some point its used for various shows during the year, mainly theater and musical events. Its great but has 2 weak points: most of the sits don't have back so you cant relax and you would have back pain from some point, the second is that the show held there are always expensive, and in the case of Vanessa it was even more. so the ticket were VIP zone 180E, A zone 120E, B zone 90E, G(Γ) zone 70E, and Upper zone 50E, and Disabled zone 30E.

:nophoto:

So i gone at the 50E one along with my 3 years older brother. In which as far as you have booked ticket you can see at whatever place you want within the zone providing its not fill with people already so we sat at the left side as closer the center as possible.

The theater got full which was quite surprising for us since we didn't knew so many people here knew of her. People's ages were from 17 to 70 years old and there were a few younger than 14 around too but no babies. Most didn't seemed to be big fans since they were complaining to each other with whispers every time she was opting her violins and didn't clap much (something at Greek people usually do) but only between the songs.

The show was scheduled to start at 21:00 but ended up staring around 21:30 for some reason.

The view wasn't very good at our position but we could see the basic things. Vanessa had a 15 members band, 10 strings of all kinda (violins, viola, cello, contra basso etc) borrowed from the National Philarmonic Orchestra and 5 others, one was playing around 6 types of percussion, among them drums, 1 that was playing e.bass, guitar and e.guitar, 1 that was playing various wind instruments (from whistle to clarinet and flute) and 1 at keyboard. Anyway there were so many different instruments in such a short stage (around 40mx15m) that I couldn't believe it.

the scheme was like that

{-------------------strings----------------------}
{percussions, wind, Vanessa, guitar, keyboard}
{-------------------Vanessa----------------------}

Herself had 2 violins, one classical and 1 electric and was wearing a silver long dress with shinny diamond looking things (most possibly fake) and same type of high-hills.

They played around 20 songs but most of them seemed quite long. I didn't knew the songs and their titles apart from the first which was rearrangement of Vivaldi's 4seasons (winter). But most should had been from this one http://www.amazon.co.jp/Choreography-Ro ... 942&sr=8-3 (her official site is still in making btw :uh..: ) since the description of the album fits the what I found at the internet and the advertising leaflet which had the album's cover image on it, there seems to have been played songs by Bach, Beethoven, Brams, Vivaldy tango indy music, and Vangelis. http://www.newpost.gr/post/52317/Η-Vanessa-Mae-το-Σεπτέμβριο-στην-Αθήνα-/ and http://www.athensnews.gr/portal/3/42820.

She started with 4 season, then passed to a soft balladish one, and to a latin and a jazzy, then arabic and then she passed at some more popish ones. Then I dont remember XD. She was changing from classical to electric violin every 3-4 songs so she needed around 1 min to opt each every time XD

At some point at a song called Hocus Pocus before the interval the title of which we learned at the end, the e.violin's string broke so she had to get another one :XD: so she promised as that she would play 1 more song at the second half and she actually replayed the song at the end.

At some point she said that she had come for the first time in Greece 17 years ago and that she comes every 2 years, and that she has come for vacation as well.

I was beyond AWESOME and Im definitely going to buy her CDs if they are available in Greece and download them if are not.

I have got some photos and a short recording of 1 min (since lots of people were also doing it even thought was not permitted). :plot: I will post them asap.

Forgot to say that she seemed a really nice person and she was so modest! compared to her popularity worldwide! :dote: :dote:
:sohappy: :sohappy: :sohappy: :sohappy:

Too bad she didn't played any of her Sailor Moon songs :cry:

lucky george! I really like her arranges and if she came here I'd definitely go see it :sohappy: and omg that is so cool you get to watch it in that ancient ampitheatre

You are so lucky :)
Vanessa Mae is one of my favourite violist. Her Devil's Trill is just awesome :D
Too bad maybe I'll never get a chance to watch her preformance live...

^ Here, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5zdwLVShHk she had played violin for 3 battle themes of the anime in the OSTs these tracks are credits to Vanessa Mae but im sure they were composed by the guy that composed the OSTs, anyway the violin is awesomely played so its surely her :dote:

EDIT: Oh I have found something here http://sailormoonforum.com/viewtopic.ph ... 9&p=116217 it says she didnt. :uh..:

When her official site is done I'm going to send her a message to her to know for sure. http://www.vanessa-mae.com/

So what osts have these tracks precisely? I'm sure Vanessa Mae is awesome but it brings back such fond memories to listen to these tracks. :shy: I would like to buy them eventually...unless their overpriced like the English track ost :blood:

Im so jealous, i love her music!! I always liked the classical remixes of Pump it up and her music was even better. The ones i like the most r her storm remix, Bach street prelude and moroccan roll. Hope u had a great time there :sohappy:

(btw why is this in otakuland? :confu: )

*BUMP*

I am prood to announce that Vanessa Mae is coming again in Athens, at the same place as last time (look first post) and she will perform on September 12. She will have her band, orchestra, and choir (those 2 probably greek like last time). There is a fresh interview of her here, but she doesnt say anything much important imo, i can translate it if you want though

Things she talks about in the interview
  • How the concert in Athens will be
  • Her opinion about the greek audience (sic)
  • Her childhood
  • Her relationship with her mother (we know she's in bad terms)
  • Her opinion about the titles like "queen of violin" that critics and audience stick on her
  • Her experience on Sochi's olympics, where she did ski (and failed)
This time I will have my new camera with me, so expect better pics :sparkleguy:

So I gone to the concert and its was very good!! The negative part is that she seems to perform the same stuff over and over again no matter where she goes, so I knew most of the songs from Youtube or the previous concert I had gone to :(

The tickets were reduced alot, since the prices were : 45, 65, 85, 120, 140 (VIP) -- look first post for old ones.

This time the setting was:

Vanessa Mae in front,
right behind, drums, percussion, saxophone,, e.guitar, bass, keyboard
and behind them, 4 violins (maybe there was viola and cello too), two contra-baso, in total 8 strings scheme

There was also a choir of 4 women and 4 men, but I doubt they were singing at all, since in all parts were they were supposed to sing, I couldnt see them opening their mouth or doing movements, and the vocals seems recorded (like african women or chinese kids lol ).

I will post later some pictures

PS: I also got some audio in good quality, post "+1" to include you in the pm. please do-not-share-further.

I've been meaning to search out her songs again after really enjoying her music back in the day. It was quite a novelty at the time for a classical musician to make that 'popular' crossover move.

I'd love to hear her perform live too!

My earliest memory of music is Vanessa Mae's CD [Storm]. I enjoyed her musics very much.
I guess she is returning to violin after competing in the Winter Olympics. Great stuff!
