Labels discussion

I've always thought Yuki Kajiura is kind of freelancer since she had changed various labels during her carear 2 during See-Saw, when she was mainly composing for Victor she did OST for Mai-Hime and Otome which were by Lantis, and Petit Cossette which was by Sony. Later she did the collab with Sound Horizon and the DreamPort single was released by King Records, which SH was in. However after Pandora Hearts she was sticking to Sony all the time, and Kalafina did as well. But recenly she changed stance again. Sayuri's single is released by Yamaha Music, and Kalafina did their first collab and Shinji Tanimura's single is released by Universal.

What's going on here ?According to the above it means that Kajiura can compose OST for different label if she wants and Kalafina can collab with other artists too (eg Kokia from her own label, or FJ with other artists)

What are the benefits of working with a certain label if you can choose shows from different labels too ?

I dont know what the japanese laws say but this is kinda confusing.

^Its basically because Yuki Kajiura is not just a composer but a "Producer" as well. :tea:

Producers often hold various rights of the acts they manage, such as neighbouring rights and rights of publicity. In addition, they negotiate on behalf of artists when licensing to record labels, publishers, distributors and merchandisers.

Ofc, with that, Kajiura is providing crucial support for her artists such as FJ, Kalafina, or even for herself, to help themselves build the foundations for their career by collaborating with other artists with different labels. :)
I wonder what will happen if she collaborated with AVEX lol XD

If she had chosen a single label to work with, she would have to follow the rules of that specific label.

For instance, I don't understand why the channel Kalafina VEVO on youtube doesn't allow us to see all their PVs... If more people see the videos, more Kalafina would be known. More profit... right?

By working with multiples Labels, she can choose what label can offer better conditions for her career. And the inverse is also true, depending of the artist chance to be successful the label must want a artist or not... In the end, it's business.

I don't think YK, personally, is contracted to any lable. Her recordings are released through the film / tv series production contracts. As for FJ and her solo albums: they seem to be released through what ever lable Spacecraft is working with at the time.

She's said before that she's freelance, but that was a long time ago so who knows it something changed. She seems to be working exclusively with Sony, so she either has a contract or they're offering her some good money and benefits, hue.

I can't say how labels work in Japan other than it seems artists seem to have a little more leeway compared to artists in the U.S.; seems artists are very able to jump around. It does sound like she is freelance but still represented through Spacecraft. Given how much she's become in demand this would make sense that she and her agent have quite a bit of negotiating power. Kalafina seems to be mostly exclusive to Sony Music and FictionJunction seem to be mostly exclusive to Victor/FlyingDog. Good for her if she has such power usually (at least here in the states) the music label you belong to owns EVERYTHING.

Question: How do HIKARU, KEIKO, and WAKANA have the liberty to participate in FictionJunction LIVES and recordings?

@Atlas Star part of the answer is that Hikaru, Keiko and Wakana haven't appeared together on any FJ live videos, only on Sony sanctioned videos as Kalafina (which is a pity because it's fun to see all six vocalists and Yuki Kajiura singing Nowhere together).
What about that time they sang Angel Gate? or other FJ live volumes with just Keiko and Wakana. I believe they go, or used to go under FictionJunction WAKANA and KEIKO respectivley

Kalafina as an act (including brand, trademark, name, logo, etc) is signed under SMEJ. The girls themselves are not.

That's why Hikaru is free to sing as backup for FJY, and Wakana and Keiko are free to sing for FJ. As long as they don't call themselves Kalafina without permission from the label, they're free to pursue other jobs as themselves.

This is the usual standard for bands/groups who have a contract with a record label. Kalafina's terms may be different since I don't know the details of their contract.
