Kalafina revealing too *much* skin? Censoring? Why?

Hi!

I had an account years ago... but god knows what my username or mail was. Anyway, there's one thing that puzzles me. As I'm in a country too crappy to buy anything from the outside, I collect (download) whatever I find of Kalafina. In this thread I'm referring to Kalafina's photobooks, pamphlets, calendars or any printed stuff with photos.

I tend to download all copies of any given material to compare and keep the best one (scans mainly). But for some time now when comparing different sources I noticed some kind of... censoring? It usually involves skirts lengths. In the photos from a given copy of the book/pamphlet/whatever skirts have the real, shorter length. And in the other they are edited to appear longer. The same applies to translucent clothes. Whoever edited the photos thought they were revealing too much skin? It's not that Kalafina members wear skimpy clothes or are too provocative. It doesn't make much sense to me.

Anyone noticed that? It would had made some sense if the photos were to be seen somewhere else, there are lots of cases where things get censored or toned down when released out of Japan (even if in this case it'd be ridiculous). But as far as I know the stuff I have was released only in Japan. Do different versions of the same photos actually exist? How do you get one or another book? Weird.

Here are some examples taken from "Kalafina Note - 5 Days in LOS ANGELES & Symphonia". Click to enlarge. Left, real photo. Right, edited one.

Any ideas?

I see what you mean. Are the covered versions from original material or you get them from bloggers ? because there's possibility that these bloggers make the censoring. However I dont see any difference in prelast pic with Hikaru, also the censoring in keiko's shirt in the last pic is so fake that it can be noticed without looking at the pic.

Wow, I just realized that. Anyway, I'm agree with you that Kalafina's outfits aren't revealing or too provocative at all. I mean, look at AKB who once released a single with them wearing 2-pieces bikini for the cover. Now that was revealing.

Don't know and don't have the theory about the editing/censorship, though.

All I can say is the editing is horrible, lol. And I totally love Hikaru's outfit in the Los Angels (looollll) photos.

@George: about Hikaru's photos, look at her top/shirt, and not her skirt. You can totally see the editing/censorship/whatever there.

@george with hikaru's particular pic, her shirt is less see-through

i remember that there used to be a tumblr blog (i think) that went around adjusting skirt lengths and things like that (prime example, that one pic that was taken in 2012 with hikaru and keiko back to back, and keiko's kneeling on the floor with one arm raised up high). i thought that that stopped, however.

a note: i have the taiwanese edition of the photobook released with AE, and they have the more "risque" version of photos. so i think that the edited versions are just bloggers.

EDIT: found them.

:fwa: Hicchan, Kei-chan...what are you doing?????? :ohoho:

Anyway, the 'censorship' is ridiculous. Kalafina's original photos aren't even close to provocative anyways, but dumb bloggers are dumb. I don't really get their mentality of 'censoring', unless they're that close-minded.

I heard of that censorship thing on the tumblr as well. And saw examples that birdie posted. Saw some more but I cant remember.

I dont think censoring is necessary in Kalafina case, but whoever does it, does it for whatever unknown reasons he/she has.

There is also someone on tumblr who was warning about this things, I think that is how I discovered it.

I suppose some people are just bored.

Yup, just treat it as playing Kalafoto Hunt™.
Kuroiyuki aka Yuki88 posted her thoughts on this long ago (on her tumblr or blog) iirc.

Also this. /thread

Yeah, I've heard of the censoring before. It's... really bizarre. They're nowhere close to being provocative! I can show any Kalafina pic to my grandmother and expect no shocking reaction--yeah, even the Hikaru and Keiko pic, since it's more hyper and bizarre than actually sexy. (She might find some of the rock songs too "noisy" for her, but that's another matter). Bored is probably the best guess, for those bloggers.

I hope I'm not going out of my way with this, but...
All of those images have probably been modified (awfully) by the same person who most of the older CPMers should know for... reasons. (also known for doing this because of cultural and religious reasons and for photoshoping him/herself together with Kalafina)
The modified images have been spread around so much that now it is hard to find the originals... sad.
IMO there is absolutely nothing wrong with the original images, and if you have a problem with this, please stop altering the images. Just ignore it or something, don't horribly photoshop them (i think im some even someone blind could notice) or at least do a better job... The ones posted here are just a few of many.

Too revealing? Lol, you gotta love Japan and its weird standards.
This "censorship" 100% has nothing to do with Japan, it is done by a fan (or maybe more started? and the one I suspect doing this can't be linked with anything asian as far as i know even)

Why does everyone think Japan has weird standards? :/

All of us grow up in different cultures, so what someone sees something as normal may be considered weird for others. It is a big big world after all...

On the issue of the "censored" images though, I see nothing wrong on doing such minor adjustments, although I am also disappointed that it became hard to find the authentic pictures due to this. I just want to see more of those images, too...

I can only assume that whoever's doing this lives in a part of the world where there are particularly strict standards where clothing is concerned, so I can understand why they'd feel the need to censor images to share them with people in their own country/social circles or whatever. I'm personally anti-censorship overall, but I do realise that there are strictly-enforced cultural and legal regulations in certain places that cause difficulties for people who live there*.

Still, it would sadden me if the 'censored' stuff is making it harder to find the originals. I'll make a point of tagging my Tumblr posts more often in future, but I still worry about not knowing whether a photo is censored or not, especially when I haven't seen the original to compare!

*in a few years' time I could well be in that position. In recent months there's been a moral panic, followed by plans to basically censor the internet throughout the UK, which could leave us with an online service closer to a police state (which is no exaggeration, honestly). It's scary to see it being pushed so enthusiastically with so little resistance, by people who don't even understand the problem. :vortex:

I wonder if someone was doing it for religious purposes or something.... It's strange and stupid though... but that's my only guess... Lengthen the skirts for some 6 yr old fans or something...
