Kalafina meaning?

I know well that YK said Kalafina is a name without a meaning, but I think I found out what it means :plot:

From Explanatory Dictionary of Romanian language:
Kala means black, shadow, and can also refer to a deity of time.
Fin (feminine form: 'fina'): soft, delicate, rafined, graceful
And also for me 'Kalafina' seems awfuly familiar to 'Catifea' (velvet).

So, Kalafina are eternal, delicate and graceful goddesses with velvet skin which sometimes tend to go to the dark side? :psst:

Also, I think someone said Kalafina means 'delicious' (forgot in what language).

^ well it can have meaning in many languages, for example, in greek "kala" (καλά) means "good", and fina (φίνα) taken from italian, means "perfect" so Kalafina could mean "goodperfect" :ohoho:

Yuki had posted once (on April 1st) that its taken from the reversed romanian (i think) word "anifalak" :XD: but this should be a joke.

aaaa nice thread, but i can't think what language... oh wait.
well in Indonesian, 'kala' means 'time' (but this word is used rarely, just in case like 'once upon a time')
and in my traditional culture, there's a myth, a God called 'Bathara Kala' he's God of Time (if i am not wrong :XD: )
but i dunno the 'fina' ....

In Romanian Kalafina means something like ''Graceful darkness' or 'Delicate goddess(es)' :sparkleguy: :sohappy: :sohappy: :sohappy:

That's super cool! Even without a meaning, I always thought it was a beautiful name for a group, but if this is what Kajiura intended it to mean, that just adds so much more depth to it. :dote:

If i remember correctly, there were claims that 'anifalak' meant 'one who defies god' in romanian or something :XD:

And yes, as pointed by Keiri, "anafilak" was Arpil's Fool. Just a joke by Kajiura :XD:

I don't believe in coincidence and I've been writing a fanfiction and there is a deity named Kalafina xD (I think all of fans have some certain things named Kalafina :D I mean we love name things with what we love mostly :ohoho: )

In my story Kalafina older than the Time itself and so mysterious that don't allow anyone to see her eyes. Seems like a fragile doll yet dark and powerful.

By the way i will say something interesting to you xD You know kalafina is read as karafina and in turkish "kara" means "dark" :XD: So when we consider fina is a name it will go like Dark Fina xD And this Fina name makes me somehow remember Fin (the angel yet the servant of Dark ) from Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanna :D
 
I didn't invent anything of what I said above. Maybe anifalak was Kajiura's joke, bu I was serious.

Possible translations: Graceful Black/Darkness, Soft Shadow, Delicate Goddess(es) (of time) and maybe some other, since a word has many meanings, the translation ca vary.
