I know I'm letting the grammar loose a bit here, but the meaning is "it's so meager that I'm too shy to tell you "

I "understand" this as "there is something that .. constructs us" ?... As in... makes us human? But I'm not 100% sure I understand the meaning here, so I left your part, it might mean that too...
